Chapter Twenty Two

 Dark Rain

I ran out into the rain, clutching my cloak around me. It was already beginning to damped and my skin felt cold.  The temple was completely dark. No Caynes, or Kelan. I couldn’t believe I had forgotten him. The poor little thing.  I had almost started crying when Laien said we could look for him tomorrow.  That was probably the only reason we were out in the rain searching for the night crawler.

“Isabel, he’s a creature of the night and forests. He’ll be fine. Come back home with me and get some rest.”  He spoke while the rain beat on his cheeks.

“No!”  I shook my head sending water flying from the tips of my hair.  “He’s mine I just can’t leave him out here.”  A gust of wind blew against us.  “I wouldn’t leave anyone out here in weather like this!”

Laien’s eyes glowed green in the dark.  He looked at me for a few moments until I dropped his gaze.  Then he walked up to me and pulled me to him.  I looked up wondering what he was trying to do. I felt the warmth of the light emanate from my hand where he held it.  “We can seek him out. You have a connection to him but you have to do the spell with me.”

My eyes turned into saucers.  “You mean use magic?”

He placed a soft kiss on my lips.  “I’ll show you.  You have magic in you.”

I swallowed dry spit and nodded.  My nervousness made my hands shake.  “What do I have to do?”

“Just close your eyes and hold him in your mind.”

I did what he said.  The image I held was of Kelan nosing around in the sunshine, exploring the shrubbery. The warmth from our joined hands began to grow.  I got that searching feeling.  Like there was something in me trying to find a way out.  I didn’t hold it in this time. I let it have free reign.  It was sorrowful. I could feel it. This part of me had never been shown and it was grieving for a chance.

Blinding light darted down at me, even from behind my closed eyes. I felt like someone had cracked something open in my chest.  It burst forth; a surge of power and energy.  Then I saw Kelan!  He was curled into a ball near tree roots.  Tearing away from Laien I opened my eyes and ran to the night-crawler.  He whimpered in my arms when I found him and nuzzled my hand.  “It’s okay.”  I cooed to the small animal while petting his already soaked fur.

“Isabel.”

I raised my gaze to Laien.  He had a look of shock and awe on his face. As he opened his mouth to speak a roar of anger sounded in the air.  If I wasn’t soaked from the rain the hairs on my body would have stood up.  We stood for a moment in the monotone drum of rain then the roar sounded again but this time it was much closer.

Kelan started to panic and squired around.  He scratched me a few times how scared he was.  Laien moved quickly to my side and grabbed my hand.  I started to feel the tug of his magic transporting us. Before the foreground could slip away something dark slithered out of the trees and lunged for us.  I couldn’t see what it was; it seemed to be made out of inky darkness, like a shadow.

Laien shook out of the transporting spell and shoved me to the side.  I collided into the mud while trying to protect Kelan in my arms.  Looking back I saw the shadow creature had managed to slash a wound across Laien’s cheek.  He stood his ground and raised his hand into the air in a fluid whipping motion.  The water gathering in muddy puddles at his feet took to the air and formed a whip.  The creature reared back and lunged for him again.

The sight of the blood smeared on his face set off so many alarms in me, it felt a chaotic chorus.  I staggered to my feet and turned to Laien’s battle with the shadow creature.  It turned to me then and poised its inky body to attack.

I recognised the danger and felt heat start to spread from my chest.  The locket was gathering its power again.  My mind flashed back to the vampire attack. I pulled the locket from my dress and held it up.

“I am the Priestess of light.”  My voice sounded as if someone had added double bass to it.  My entire body felt heavy and compact with energy and power.  This was my magic.  It was terrifyingly beautiful.

The creature didn’t scream. It made no more movement.  The light filled the space and I felt its warmth and pureness.  For one blinding moment I saw something in the light that made my breath catch.  And then it was gone.
