Baylee ran outside.
She didn't know what she was doing. She just felt good.
Not only because she was able to defend herself, but because it all felt right.
Even though it was all wrong.
At one moment she realized that she was doing a horrible thing. She was doing what she was told never to do. Neglecting the rule.
But nothing mattered.
Baylee stood still. That was what she did when she didn't know what to do.
She wanted to do something, but in this situation she had to do nothing.
Because what could she do?
Baylee ran inside and put the rifle down. She ran back into her room.
It would be better if she never touched it.
She felt hunger, but she was home alone with Kaspar. She couldn't rob the storage room...
...Or could I?
It was just one loaf of bread that she needed. So quietly, Baylee slipped off her bed.
She caught herself always wanting to do the wrong thing.
What's wrong with me today?
Footsteps.
The creak of a door.
Baylee had done it before.
But it was to save somebody.
Now she needed it herself. Maybe she was really becoming a criminal...
Maybe it was normal for a girl whose life had been ruined by war. Maybe she just needed some recovery.
Or maybe she was just a spoiled brat.
Baylee grabbed a piece of bread and again, saw a gun. It looked heavier than the one she had previously grabbed.
"Baylee? What are you doing?"
Kaspar.
She was about to confess, but the voice inside her told her not to.
"I wanted some bread," she finally said shyly. "But we're home alone..."
"Oh, okay then."
He walked back. Baylee exhaled in relief and followed him.
But before she left, she picked up the gun...
