Baylee continued bravely. It was safe for a while.
"Let's find a good high place to shoot people from."
"Actually sounds good."
"I know, I know, I am a genius."
"A crazy genius, to be exact."
"A crazy genius, alright then. Wow, what about that building?"
"The clock tower? Yeah, of course," Kaspar joked sarcastically. "Let's mess up the only good-looking building in the city."
"Of course, what else have we got to do?"
"Be quiet, they'll hear us."
"There is nobody here."
"They are everywhere. Just that nobody sees them."
"Them? You mean the enemies?"
"Yup, surprise surprise."
Baylee shrugged.
"Uh, it's cold."
"Shouldn't have gotten out here if you don't wanna get sick."
"I don't. I have other reasons to be here. Unlike you, by the way."
"I'm accompanying you."
"Okay then, let's go maybe?" Baylee raised her voice.
"What have I said about being quiet?"
"And you think I should always listen to you?"
"Maybe we should both listen to each other. We're here together..."
"Let's go already then! Stop wasting time will you?"
A shot.
"See? Now run!"
Baylee picked up Kaspar.
"Kaspar! Can you walk? Can you speak?"
No reply.
"Kaspar! You alive?"
Silence.
"Answer!"
Another shot. Baylee's knee started bleeding through.
She ran with Kaspar's body in her hands.
"Kaspar!"
She felt his heart and realized it wasn't beating.
A tear rolled down her cheek. She didn't feel guilty, rather spiteful- more at the enemy than herself or Kaspar.
It was not their fault that he had died.
She picked up her rifle and shot into the window.
"The girl's there!" She heard.
Baylee looked around in dismay and jumped out, landing on the snow. Everyone was chasing around.
Someone grabbed her sleeve. She escaped.
Run, run, run.
She got to some tree and climbed it. It was safe here, at least for now.
Baylee had no idea what she would do next, without Kaspar.
Another tear.
