Nothing had happened in a week. Baylee and Kaspar were talking, but not doing anything worth their time.
"Just wait 'til the war is over," he told her. "You think living in the Passages is much more interesting? The war affects everyone the same way. Just that we're stuck here. We're lucky that it's safe."
"Not entirely."
"It is safe, compared to the outside world."
"I like the outside world."
"I'll remind you when you're shot."
"Last time we weren't shot."
"We were saved, remember?"
Baylee shrugged her shoulders proudly.
"What? Nothing to say?" Kaspar teased.
"Yup," Baylee confessed. "But I'm leaving."
"Only with me!" Kaspar stood up and chuckled at his own words. "You got me. Yes, I do wanna leave."
Another shot.
"Ah, damn!"
Baylee dropped on the ground near Kaspar's body.
"Are you hurt?"
He nodded, blood on his forehead.
"I'll stay here."
"No, they found us!"
"It's okay. Run for your life. It's hard to notice me, I'm hiding in the snow."
"You can't even protect yourself! Damn, okay, I'm leaving!"
But she stayed. Helped Kaspar get up.
"Come on, you must go."
"How?"
"You can walk."
"I can, sure, but I'm such an easy target!"
"And also such a drama queen!"
He didn't laugh. Instead, he just looked at Baylee with disrespect.
"Okay, okay, I'm sorry," she apologized. "But seriously, stop whining. You're like a spoiled little kid."
"We're both little kids. I don't know about being spoiled though."
Baylee found it funny, but the situation wasn't the best for laughing. She faked a quiet chuckle and walked away.
Kaspar ran after her.
"You forgot about me!"
"I didn't. I was just expecting you to be faster."
"I'm not fast you know."
"Oh yeah?"
"Wanna fight?"
"Why would I?"
"So sassy."
"It's you who is sassy.
Kaspar was silent. They walked on for a while.
"The city is dangerous," Baylee remarked.
"I think I can decide for myself."
She stopped.
"Wait, what have we gotten ourselves into?"
"It's your idea. No turning back now."
