Twenty years later
“Hey mom watch this!” Bree called and I watched as she flicked her chain and it wrapped around the base of the tree. Fire blazed down the chain and as she jerked back the tree snapped and fell. “I did it!” She jumped up and down.
“Yes you did.” I smiled. Bree was a Fire Guardian like me. She had taken after me in almost every way. She had dark red hair with brown eyes and an attitude that almost matched mine. She was my little girl and I couldn’t be prouder to have a fire Guardian as a daughter.
“Well look at little Bree. Isn’t she special with her fire,” Tanner teased as he entered the clearing. “You bring the tree?” He wrapped his arm around his little sister. “Way to go.”
She smiled up at him. “Thanks.” Tanner was Damon and mine eldest and of course the Son of our pack. He was thirteen while Bree was ten. Tanner was the spinning image of Damon and he also was a Strength Guardian. Every time I looked at him I felt I was looking at Damon when he was a boy.
“Well she most certainly has her mother’s strength,” Damon said as he wrapped his arm around my shoulder.
“Of course she does. She’s a Fire Guardian.” I rolled my eyes at him.
“Mom can Tanner and I go get some ice cream?” Bree asked as she skipped up to us. One thing I was glad about for Bree was that she got to be more carefree than me growing up. She would never be the leader of the pack so she got to enjoy her childhood. Tanner on the other hand was more than born for it. Having my attitude and Damon’s Hunters blood made him want to lead. He even had the Hunter’s family mark.
“Sure, just make sure you don’t have too much and be back in time for dinner.”
Chuckling Damon and pulled me closer to him after the kids left. “So now that the kids are gone what do you wanna do? We finally have some alone time.” He kissed me.
Damon and I had been happy ever since the beginning. We never fought, which was weird. I had always thought partners were supposed to fight to an extent. Fighting made you stronger but we agree on pretty much everything and even when we didn’t we talked about it calmly and figured out what to do.
As soon as I turned twenty-five, the age of being able to have children, we had Tanner and then three years later Bree. We had been so happy to have both of them. Of course I had been kinda worried about being a mom since I wasn’t the typical type of girl and I had never really been around kids but Damon had had so much faith in me.
“I have to go get started on dinner.” I lightly kissed him back. “Everyone is coming over for dinner remember.”
Damon groaned. “Yeah I know. I was just hoping for some alone time with you.” His hands ran down my back to my butt. “It feels like we’ve always had children. I only got one night with you. One of the best nights of my life.”
I smiled. “That was both a good night and a bad one. You did nearly die that night don’t you remember.”
“Yes but that was also the night you because mine completely. You were…”
“Ok I think that’s enough.” I shook my head. “I know what happens when you start thinking about that and I can’t afford that now. I need to get back to the house.”
Damon and I had moved once I became pregnant. Even though I loved that house it only had one extra bedroom and we both wanted at least two kids. It also helped we were able to move closer to everyone, instead of being on the opposite side of town. We now lived right down the street from my parents in a two story house with four rooms and plenty of room for the kids.
