"Um, mind telling me where we're going?"
"Shh, just follow me."
Carter cut through the garden with Morgan quickly trailing behind him. They went past a bunch of kids playing Tag, a couple making out, and an old lady feeding ducks.
"I didn't know they had ducks here," said Morgan, stopping to look at them.
"Well, we don't have the time to look at birds. Come on." Carter grabbed her arm and pulled her along.
"Jeez, what's the rush?"
"You'll find out soon enough."
They reached the entrance of the hospital. Carter accidentally bumped into a man who was heading towards the building.
"Terribly sorry, sir."
The man seemed to preoccupied to care and hurriedly entered the hospital. As soon as he was gone, Carter spun around with a set of car keys hanging from his finger.
"You stole his keys?!"
"Shh, not so loud! And I didn't steal, I borrowed without asking."
Morgan rolled her eyes. "So you're just going to borrow his car without asking?"
"Exactly."
"How do you know he's not going to realise?"
Carter shrugged. "I don't. But I do know he's going to be in the hospital till four. So that gives us five hours to do whatever we want."
He pressed the button on the key and blue sports car nearby beeped.
"Oh, damn. That's an expensive car," said Morgan.
"Yeah, I didn't know he was one of the rich ones. Well, I just gotta make sure I don't crash it."
Carter opened the door and sat down in the driver's seat. He looked over at Morgan. "Are you going to get in or do I need to carry you?"
She rolled her eyes again. "If we get into any kind of shit, I'm blaming you." She took her seat next to Carter. "So, where are we going?"
"You'll see."
They drove around the city for an hour or so, with the speakers blaring. They sang pop punk songs on the top of their lungs and got nasty looks for the pedestrians, but they didn't care. After a long time, both of them were genuinely happy. And they were going to cherish that feeling.
She was good for him, and he was good for her. They both helped in each other's recovery in their own way. Carter made Morgan feel alive again, and she gave him hope. There was a mutual understanding between the two, and somehow, words were never needed. The mere presence of the other was enough to make their day better.
Carter's day was definitely better than what it had started out as. He'd woken up feeling guilty about Vivian, but now she was the last thing on his mind. That was a new feeling, but it was definitely one he could get used to.
Carter parked the car in front of an ice-cream parlour. "Do you want a mint chocolate chip ice-cream?"
Morgan raised her eyebrow. "How do you know that's my go-to flavour?"
Carter looked away from to hide his red cheeks. "I may or may not have stalked your Instagram."
Morgan laughed. "Yeah, okay, I don't mind. But I feel guilty eating in front of you."
"You shouldn't. Would it help if I ate a little?"
She tilted her head to the side. "You sure?"
He shrugged. "Yeah it's cool. Even though half a cup of ice-cream does have 250 calories, I guess I can handle it."
