After Ceylin went to sleep, Emir asked Feriha to come with him to study. The easy going of past hours gone in its place was stress and uneasiness. He opened the door for her to enter; she deliberately kept a space between them. Feriha sat on a chair near the fireplace. The chilling atmosphere had nothing to do with freezing temperature outside. Emir was putting logs in the fireplace. He seemed detached; finally he looked at Feriha with his icy cold eyes.
He spoke as if choosing the words with care. 'Feriha, I have to know why you came back—why after four years of silence, you suddenly appeared again.'
The atmosphere in the room changed, suddenly he became stranger. He continued slowly, 'I have thought of several reasons. I need to know the truth, Feriha. I need to understand.'
She was looking at him now as he went on, 'At first I thought it was money.' He must have seen Feriha's expressions of denial, he quickly said, 'Don't be upset. It's hard for a woman to survive on her own. Savde inquired about you and told me you were living with your friend Sophie. She said you might be in need of money. Do you need money? But I know you would never come to me for money. ' Laughed harshly, 'who knows you, better than me? Am I right?'
'No! I will never come to you for money. I never asked for anything from you.' Feriha snapped.
'So you have come for divorce, Feriha. Is John the person you want to get married? I can tell he is in love with you.'
'Yes, he likes me, he wants to marry me.' Her temper was rising now. 'What do you think? Anyone who falls in love with me, I should marry him?' she bitterly said, looking into his eyes.
'Then why did you come here, Feriha. Tell me your reason. I am going crazy.'
She said quietly, controlling her anger.' I came to see Ceylin.'
'Your maternal feelings? But they are little late. Aren't they?'
'That's hardly my fault.'
'I would have thought that was very much your fault.' He leaned forward accusingly, 'Ceyln is four years old. Why did it take that long to decide suddenly that you want to see your child? And this disguise as Miss Aynur—what the hell was that for?
