Study was dark surrounded by flickering lights of outside. Emir could not sleep; he kept on turning twisting in his bed. He came to study, didn't turn on the lights, and wanted to stay in dark. He wanted to escape the memories which were following him. Today playing in snow brought back the memories; the moments he had spent with Feriha in mountain house. One memory sparkled the extinguished fire which he had promised himself never to visit again. Shy Feriha, innocent Feriha and then fiery, stubborn Feriha, kept on overlapping one memory over another. Why did she enter his mind? He hated her for deserting her newborn baby, him leaving behind no trace of her. He didn't have the answers. Miss Aynur somewhere reminded him of her. Her smile hidden behind the dark glasses today.
He was pulled towards her how much he tried to keep his distance. This was the first time in four years. He was intrigue with her. Today when all three of them landed in snow her laughter reminded him of Feriha, She seemed to be mystery that he wanted to solve for the sake of his own sanity. Ceylin was attached to her, Miss Aynur too was. He had erased every sign of his wife from his life, his memories locked away in the drawer of her study table.
He unlocked the drawer and with trembling hands took out their marriage pictures. He had kept his wedding ring also there. For few minutes he went on staring at Feriha who was glowing with happiness. He was torturing himself, he could not take this pain and anger anymore, threw the pictures in the drawer and locked it. He was so tired from today's venture that never knew when he slept on the couch.
Shortly after midnight something woke her. She tried to find what woke her up. There again she heard the sharp cry in the dark. It was coming from Ceylin's room.
Reaching for her brown woolen robe, she pulled it around her as she ran down the hall. She switched on the bedside lamp. Ceylin was tossing and whimpering in her sleep.
"Wake up, pet,' Feriha whispered, gathering her in her arms.
Ceylin opened her eyes, dark with panic. Her face looked pale and she buried her head in Feriha's arms. She began to cry, "There was a snake,' she sobbed, 'he was chasing me.'
Feriha held her close until she had stopped crying. She cleaned her face with tissue."It was a dream dear, a bad dream.'
'I was scared,' Ceylin hiccupped.
'Snuggle under the covers before you catch cold and I'll tell you the story.' Feriha smiled at her gently.
Ceylin eyes brightened," Tell me story about my bear,' she said, hugging her teddy with one arm while her other hand tightly clasped Feriha's
"Once upon a time, far away in the forest----'Feriha began in soothing voice. Ceylin eyes were shut in no time. Feriha stopped speaking, loosening her fingers from Ceylin's small hand. For a few minutes she stood there, looking at her daughter. All the love she felt for her little one was in her face. Then she straightened and took a deep breath of relief. Ceylin took her back to her childhood. Her mother had brought her up with all the love, she was her shield, tried to protect her from coming storms. Now she was telling her daughter the stories which her mother had told her when she was child.
