*** Rachel's POV ***
Jacob actually talked to me. That's two people who talked to me in the past hour, and it's the first day of school. I think this year will go well. But I don't want to jinx the idea either.
" Yeah, it is weird." I smiled back and turned around. Rebecca gave me that, " I saw sparks between you two," smile, and I just rolled my eyes. She chuckled.
Rebecca was smart enough to know not to say anything because Jacob was right behind us, and that would cause things. Smart girl.
" Okay, hopefully you are all finished with your packets." Mrs. Raymond told us. She began collecting them. Good thing I was a fast writer and I finished. So did Rebecca, from the looks of it.
" Mrs. Raymond?" Rebecca raised her hand while the teacher was coming over.
" Yes, Rebecca?"
" We're still going to be having lunch here, right? Even though we haven't had our tour." Rebecca asked.
" Yes."
" What's for lunch?"
" Bread sticks with sauce."
" Oh, okay." Rebecca said, handing Mrs. Raymond her packets.
Once she was done collecting everyone's packets, she stood back in front of the room.
" I want everyone to take out the schedules that were mailed to them and put them on your desk. If someone doesn't have theirs I have a copy."
Everyone began taking out their schedules, so I took my planner and flipped it so it showed my schedule. Mrs. Raymond looked down at my planner.
" Well I guess Ms. Rachel is one step ahead!" She smiled at me. " I want everyone to take the planner that you were told to buy and tape your schedule on your planner wherever you feel is the most convenient for you. If you don't have a planner, I have some, but they're not fancy so you'll have to decorate it."
Rebecca took out her planner and I almost asked if we could trade. It had ( what looked like ) all of her interests on it. Pictures from The Walking Dead, Stranger Things, bands, singers, books, everything. I also noticed that her nails were painted green, almost like the color of my hair.
" Hey! Your nails match my hair." I told her. She looked down at her nails and at my hair and smiled.
" Yes! I'll have to give you some of this nail polish color so you can have matching hair and nails." She chuckled. So did I.
Rebecca looked at my planner and saw it was Harley Quinn.
" Wait, you like Harley Quinn?!" She asked me.
" Yes! And I already know you do because you said it earlier today." She smiled at me. And that was pretty much our conversation before we started studying our schedules.
" If your schedule says Gym 1, you will be having Gym the first day of when we start switching classes which will be Thursday. If your schedule says Art 1, that means you will be having Art the first day of when we start switching classes. So, if you have Gym on Thursday, the next day you would have Art and so forth and so on." Mrs. Raymond explained, which helped a lot. I was a little confused.
" When do you have Gym?" Rebecca asked me.
" Gym 1." I responded.
" Me too!" She said.
So I found out that I have Gym/Art, Social Studies and Music with Rebecca. That's good. Plus I have lunch and homebase with her, so that's a good portion of the day that I'll be with her.
But then, I'll have three more periods without her. That's not good. I'll be alone and with no one. I'm kind of used to it though.
It was a good thing that they had the times of my classes on my schedule. I'd need that.
I saw that we would be going to lunch at eleven twenty. It's ten twenty right now and on a normal school day, I would be in math. We have one more hour until lunch and I think I'm going to die because I'm starving and I forgot to eat breakfast this morning.
" I can't believe lunch is in an hour from now," I told Rebecca.
" Are you going to live?" She asked sarcastically.
" Actually," I looked down and put one hand on my stomach. " I'm not sure." Rebecca chuckled and so did I.
Rebecca and I started fidgeting with our hair and pencils, and I heard Jacob talking to Corey in the back of us. Maybe Corey was nice, but I heard he picks his nose. But I'm not sure, that's what Rebecca told me.
" So what do you have? I have Homebase first period, I have math second period, social studies third period, science fourth period, lunch fifth period, Gym one and Art two sixth period, language arts seventh period, and music eighth period. And then we go back to Homebase after so we can get our stuff." I heard Jacob say to Corey. Well... I guess I have Science, gym, math and art with Jacob.
" Cool. I have most of the same classes as you." Corey said.
" Everyone should be done with looking at their schedule by now. What I want you to do before we go to lunch, is read a book of your choice. If you do not have a book with you, than tell me and I'll allow you to choose a book from the library in the back of the room." Mrs. Raymond pointed to the small selection of books she had in the back of the room and everyone looked at it. But, it seemed like everyone had their own book, so it didn't apply to anyone.
After what felt like hours of reading, I looked at the clock and saw it was eleven fourteen, and we start going to lunch at eleven fifteen. So I was expecting the transition bell to ring soon.
Once the bell rang, everyone put down their books.
" The first row can line up for lunch."
As Mrs. Raymond called each of the rows in the classroom to line up, everyone was silent.
" Now let's go to the lunch room." She said. She began walking and everyone followed her in a straight line. I thought it was kind of ridiculous how we're in seventh grade and we're still going to places in lines, but it is what it is. They're feeding us food.
Rebecca and I were in line next to each other, and once we entered the lunch room, we both made the same face.
" This lunch room is huge!" I told Rebecca. She nodded in agreement.
" Lunch smells so good, too," She said. " You're going to sit with me, right Rachel?"
" Yes Rebecca." We were sarcastically saying each other's names, so it wasn't a serious conversation. She already knew I was going to sit with her.
" Call me Becca. Or Becky, if you're that person. People also used to call me Beck."
" I'll call you all three, depending on my mood." I told her. We both laughed.
" Bye seventh graders! I'll see you when you get back from lunch." Mrs. Raymond said. Finally. Some alone time between Becca and I without the teacher.
There were three lines to get lunch. One of them was for bread sticks, one of them was for salad, and the other one was for anything else you wanted such as chips or another meal. I went into the bread sticks line with Becca, but I spotted Pringles and I love Pringles. But I'm pretty sure you needed money for that so I can't get them today.
For my lunch, I got bread sticks with meat sauce, a mini salad, juice ( I don't like milk ) and cheese.
Becca was already seated, so I sat right next to her. She was already eating her meal.
" Is it good?" I asked her while laughing because she was shoving milk down her throat. She laughed as well and began to choke on the milk, which made us both laugh even harder. She gave me the one finger, signaling to hold on, and she cleared her throat.
" Yes." She said with sarcastic expression. I smiled and dipped my bread stick in my meat sauce and took a bite.
" So what was happening with you and Jacob today?" She asked me.
" Nothing... why?" I tried to ignore the subject.
" You should've seen the way he was looking at you. If only you had eyes behind your head..."
" As much as I want eyes behind my head, I don't have them, so unfortunately for me, I didn't see the way he was looking at me with unconditional love in his eyes." I said sarcastically. Becca rolled her eyes while smiling.
" Whatever. Maybe it was just him being friendly." Becca told me. But I knew she still thought he liked me.
" It's only the first day. He barely knows me. Plus, I'm a nerd anyway." I told her.
" There he is!" She squealed.
" Who?" I asked, clueless.
" Ask him to come sit with us!" She poked me. Once I saw who she was referring to, I rolled my eyes.
" He wouldn't wanna sit at the nerd table, with me." I told her. She raised her eyebrows in a, "Watch this," type of way.
" Jacob!" She yelled. He looked over.
" Come sit with us." She told him. He smiled and came over. Once I saw he was coming over, I tried to look busy and I began opening my juice.
" Hi." He said. Becca said it too, and then pinched my thigh making me say hi as well.
" Hi." I said awkwardly to him, trying not to sound like I'm in pain.
" Rachel, right?" Jacob began opening his juice as well. He got the same kind as me, orange.
" Yeah." I grinned at him. Finally, someone who remembered my name.
" And..." He looked over at Becca, forgetting her name.
" Rebecca," She replied and he nodded. " But you can call me Becca if you want."
" I'll do that." He said in a low voice. Then, he took a bite of his bread stick.
" I'm pretty sure you're in my Science, gym and art class." I told him.
" What makes you so sure?" He asked me.
" I overheard you and Corey talking about your schedule." I said truthfully. I didn't want to lie on the first day, it would make me seem weirder than I already was.
" Ahhh okay." Jacob smiled and we both started laughing. This was awkward.
Since I was done with my food, I went to throw it out. I was scared to leave Jacob and Becca alone though, because I didn't want her to say anything to him.
" I'll be right back," I told them. I headed towards the trash can.
" Okay," Becca replied.
I threw out my food in the trash can, pulled up my pants and walked back to our table.
" I'm back." I said as I sat down.
" Great," Becca smiled sarcastically. I hit her arm.
" Ouch! That hurt!"
" Good!" I said. Jacob and I started laughing and she just gave me a sarcastic mad face. I've mentioned the word sarcastic a lot. I think this is going to be one of those sarcastic friendships.
" You guys are weird," Jacob told us. Becca and I looked at each other, and at the same time, said "Thank you!"
We all laughed. Jacob went to throw out his tray.
" I ship it!" Becca whispered to me.
" There's not a thing between us. That would be weird." I told her.
" Why? You two would be so cute together!"
" He's normal looking. I'm the one that looks like Harambe with green hair." Becca laughed when I said that.
" Here. I'll give you my number when we get back to Homebase. Text me tonight at whatever time, I'm always on my phone." Becca told me.
" Okay."
Jacob came back.
" You know what would be so cool?" Becca asked Jacob and I.
" What?" We said at the same time.
" If we were the three musketeers!" She laughed, and so did Jacob and I.
" You and your imagination." I put my hand on one of her shoulders and patted it.
Once we were back at Homebase, Becca took out a pen and wrote her number down on my arm. She has extremely nice handwriting, because I could actually read it. And I don't know why I know this, but it's kind of hard to write on skin.
" There. Now text me tonight but say it's you because I might think you're some weirdo who found my number." Becca told me.
" Well technically isn't that what I am?" I asked her and we both cracked up.
*** hours later ***
I decide to text Becca. There wasn't any homework for me to do, and I'm bored. I text the number she wrote on my arm.
Me - Hey it's Rachel.
Becky - Hi!
Me - So why exactly did you give me your number?
Becky - Cause I want to talk to you about Jacob.
Me - Okay... so... talk.
Becky - You two are super cute together. I noticed when you went to throw out your lunch tray, his eyes followed you and he was staring at you. He didn't even acknowledge that I was there.
Me - Really?
Becky - Yes. I think he likes you. But I'm not sure so don't ask him out or anything.
Me - Um yeah I wasn't planning on that. I don't even know if I like him or not.
Becky - Why not?!?! He's perfect for you!
Me - Goodnight Becky 😂💕
Becky - Fine. Goodnight.
And with that, I went to sleep.
