*** Rachel's POV ***
I woke up, feeling great. Well, immune system wise.
I immediately texted Jacob.
Me- Hey!
Jacob- Hi!! How are you feeling?
Me- I'm coming to school 😍😂
Jacob- finally
Me- lol
Jacob- Walk with me to the bus stop?
Me- Of course, but not now. I just got up. Besides, I have to get ready.
Jacob- You don't have to doll yourself up, you look beautiful anyways
Me- Thanks
Again, just friends.
Jacob- what are you doing after school today? Maybe we could hang out since you're feeling better
Me- Nothing. And yeah, I think that'd be fun.
Jacob- 😌
Me- I'm gonna go get ready now. I'll text you when I'm ready to go to the bus stop.
Jacob- okay ❤
Me- okay 💓
I was so happy that I was feeling better. Wait, no! I hate school.
I just love my friends.
Anyways, I decided to wear a long sleeved dark blue ' obey ' shirt with black pants and my white high top converse. My fashion sense is so creative! Note the sarcasm.
I didn't bother putting on any makeup because I wasn't feeling it. I think this is the first time people will see the upgraded version of me without makeup. I could kind of already predict how this day was going to go.
I straightened my hair like I normally do and walked downstairs.
For breakfast, I was actually hungry, and I saw a new box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. There was a note, that read:
Hi honey! I thought you'd enjoy this cereal this morning. I know it's your favorite!
Love,
Mom.
You gotta love her.
I poured myself a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and enjoyed every bite of it.
I looked at the time, it was time to go walk with Jacob. I texted him.
Me- Hey I'm ready
Jacob- Okay 💕
Me: see you in a few seconds 😂💖
I saw that Jacob was outside so I went out and walked to him.
" Hey," I said. I smiled at him.
" Hey."
We started walking.
" Okay, it's weird admitting this to you, but I'm lowkey excited about going to your halloween party." I confessed. We kept staring at each other for a while until he made an exaggerated ' oh my God ' face.
" Whaaaat? Wait, is Ms. Dawn really excited for one of the most popular boys in school's party? Whoaaaa!" We both laughed at his sarcastic tone and I nodded.
But wait a second... he called me Ms. Dawn.
Did he seriously remember from the first day of school that I didn't like my last name? Whoa.
And in case you forgot, Dawn is my middle name. How did he remember that?
" How did you remember that?" I ask him. We were at the bus stop now.
" Remember what?" Jacob looked at me with a confused face
" My middle name," I told him. He began scratching the back of his head and I could tell he was looking for an excuse. Cutie.
" Well, you said it in the beginning of the year," he explained. " And then it kind of just, stuck in my brain."
I grinned. " Stuck there, huh?"
He looked so embarrassed and I began laughing. Our bus came.
" I see how it is." I told him. Gosh, I love teasing him. It's so funny.
I don't see Becky on the bus but I sit in the same spot. After the fact, Jacob sits next to me. I figured.
" Jeez. The one day I'm here, this girl is late? What a shame," I said to him jokingly. He laughed which showed his full set of braces, which I thought were extremely cute. I always thought I needed braces on my top teeth, but my dentist tells me differently.
" What are you staring at?" He asked me. I completely snap out of my zone and realized that I was just staring at his braces for the past few minutes. It probably gave him the thought that I was looking at his lips and wanted to kiss him. But those weren't my intentions.
Although, if that happened, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
" Nothing," I lied. " I was looking at your braces and it reminded me of how I think I need braces on my top teeth, but my dentist tells me differently." The second part, though, I wasn't lying about.
" Say ahh for me." Jacob said, cupping my chin. I say ahh, and he leans in closer to me and I honestly thought he was going to kiss me.
" Looks good to me," he smiled, breaking his grip from my chin.
Nope. Turns out he was just checking whether it looked like I needed braces or not. I hate how I get ahead of myself on everything.
I giggle, trying to hide that I thought of that moment otherwise.
*** Jacob's POV ***
I have to admit, when I was cupping her chin, I almost wanted to kiss her. She probably thought nothing of it. But if she thought that... then I wouldn't mind it. But then again, we're not even dating, and we're only 12. And I'm almost 13. Wait... that reminds me. When's her birthday? ( if I mentioned her birthday before, let's just pretend like I didn't )
" When's your birthday?" I ask her.
" June twenty first," she replies. That's a great birthday. The summer, and everything.
" Oh." Wait... does this mean she'll be throwing a pool party for her birthday? Because if she is... that would be so much fun.
It was time to go to school, and Rachel and I walked to homeroom together. Duh.
We sat down and saw that Becky still wasn't here. I could kind of see the anger in her eyes, which honestly, if my best friend wasn't here and I wasn't here for the past few days, I'd probably be upset too.
" Sorry I'm late!" Becky tells the class. Well, technically, she was intending to say it to Mrs. Raymond, but when you're one of those loud speaking, out of breath people, then of course the whole class will listen as well. Because everyone's just nosy like that.
Becky came and sat next to Rachel. Yay. Now Rachel doesn't have to be sad anymore.
*** Rachel's POV ***
Becky came and sat next to me. Yay. Now I don't have to be sad anymore.
I roll my eyes at her playfully once she sits down, and she laughs.
" Why were you late?" I whisper. I kind of felt like Jacob was eavesdropping, but I trust him. So if it was a really serious topic, I knew he'd never tell anyone.
" It's a long story," she explains. " Unless you care to hear it."
I nod. She smiles.
" Long story short, my mom is diagnosed with cancer. My cousin had to bring her to the doctor last night, and we just got the news this morning. I'm like, sad about it, ya know? Like I love my mom." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Mrs. Kourt having cancer? That's upsetting.
" I'm so sorry," I look at her, and she has tears in her eyes. It was almost like she was saying, ' suck it up ' to herself in her head, because after a moment, her tears were gone.
I look at Jacob and make sure that he understands not to tell anyone. Literally all I had to do was look at him for a few seconds, and he knew what I meant.
" Okay. Today, class, we will be doing something a little bit differently since Halloween is coming up." I was shocked. I haven't heard Mrs. Raymond talk in a while.
" You will be assigned to do a presentation on Halloween and it's meanings. I will assign you a partner and you will discuss about the slide. Okay?"
Everyone nods and she starts assigning partners.
" Rachel and Jacob, Becky and Corey," the list went on. Don't get me wrong, I was happy that I was with Jacob and not some weird kid in our class ( because there's plenty of those ) but I kind of wanted to be with Becky because of the news she got. But anyways, she got Corey ( the kid who sits next to Jacob ) and he seems okay so it shouldn't be bad.
" Everyone, sit next to your partner and begin talking about your presentation. You will have your Language Arts classes and homebase to work with your partner, and if your partner isn't in your Language Arts class, we'll be switching your schedules around a little bit for your presentation. You will have until November seventh to finish your project." Mrs. Raymond explained. Jacob and I gave each other that, ' we're gonna be partners in the same class together and we'll most likely fool around but we might get some work done' look. I mean, it was true. I got to work with my best friend. Well, my guy best friend.
*** Jacob's POV ***
Yes. I get to work with Rachel. God, I love her so much. In a friend way though.
I think.
*** Rachel's POV ***
Corey and I basically swapped seats, but shortly after, Jacob and I decided to sit in the back where we could focus more.
" Just so you know," I explain to Jacob. " When I do a presentation, I'll end up staying up until late at night making sure it's perfect. Just be aware."
He puts his arm on my shoulder and pats it a few times before moving it away.
" Don't stress yourself over it." I love how he comforts me. I mean, Becky does too, but they have different ways.
" I can't make promises," I smile. We began looking up some stuff about Halloween on our computer, when our fingers touch on accident. I don't move my hand, he does, because it shouldn't be weird between us. We're best friends. And if we move away that would completely give away the fact that I like him, so I'd rather not do that. There was a small silence while I was typing. I knew he thought I typed fast.
" What should the topic be on?" I asked. He looked at me as if I was the dumbest person in the world.
" Halloween, duh," he replied. I laughed.
" No, I know, but like what questions are we going to ask?"
" I don't know. You're the smart one here," he said. What was that supposed to mean?
" That's not true," I told him. " You're really smart as well."
" Well I mean, I can't argue with that," he grinned. We both chuckled a bit, until I turned out into full on laughter.
"What's going on back there?" Mrs. Raymond yells to us. Uh oh. Everyone turns to Jacob and I in the back of the room.
" Nothing," I lied. " We were looking up something about Halloween and it said something funny." Thank God Jacob had a mind like me, and he immediately looked up funny facts about Halloween. He put the computer back in between us.
" And would you care to share what it is?" Mrs. Raymond asks me. I start blushing, and I'm pretty sure everyone notices.
I glanced at the computer and the first thing I saw was, ' spirits and people believed they were crazy' and something about the ' ouija board' so I made something up.
" So, they said, back in the day, when the ouija board was invented, that it was some silly game. And since we didn't have the investigators we do now, some people thought the ouija board was true, while some didn't. So they ended up locking them up because some people went crazy over it," I paused for a second and realized how professional I sounded. I glanced over at Jacob and looked back at the teacher. " So, the reason why we thought this was funny, was because of the stuff people believed. Some people thought it was because the game itself was cursed and anyone who dared to play it would die, some people believed that you'd get possessed and crazy things like that."
Dang. I didn't think I could think that fast.
" Mhm. Thank you for sharing, Ms. Herring. Very interesting. Just know the next time you and Jacob fool around, you'll be in detention."
Everyone did their glances at each other, but she called me by my last name. Mrs. Raymond actually had the nerve to call me by my last name. Wow.
I glared at her with a death look when she called me by my last name. She didn't notice though. This was going to be a long year.
I felt Jacob's eyes on me when she said my last name. He knew I was upset.
Anyways, everyone resumed talking about their projects and such. So did Jacob and I.
" You're a savage, Rachel," he tells me. I smile sarcastically and nod.
" It's what I'm here for." We start laughing quietly, because we knew that if Mrs. Raymond heard us, that she'd get us in trouble again.
" Do you want to hang out tomorrow? I mean, it's Saturday, so it doesn't have to be at a certain time," Jacob asks me. I grin.
" Yes, of course. That'd be fun. I'll ask my mom tonight."
And with that, we just kept smiling at each other until the period was over.
