The rest of the day was slow and quiet. I avoided mentioning anything about Dan or Phil to Avery, because I could tell she was starting to get annoyed with it.

Finally, the school day ended. Avery begged me to stay after school for some sort of club she was in, but I decided not to go. The amount of homework I was getting was starting to overwhelm me. Some of it was homework I shouldn't have had to worry about in the first place, being the new kid and all, but I guess it is what it is.

As I left the front entrance of the school, I looked over at the bike rack, noticing Dan and Phil both unhooking their bikes and getting on them.

They suddenly spotted me and began slowly pedaling towards me.

"Hi Emma." Phil said to me.
"Hey guys." I responded back.
"Where's your friend?" Dan asked.
"She's staying after for some sort of club." I said.
"Oh." Dan responded.
"Well... would you mind if we walked to your house with you?" Phil asked.
"Well, pedal..." Dan added. "Since we are on our bikes."
I shrugged. "Sure. Why not? I could use the company."

The two of them continued to pedal next to me. Dan was on my right and Phil was on my left. As I looked around, everyone from school was giving me a look.

"Just ignore them." Phil assured me. "They always do this when they see us."
"They're probably surprised to see me with you guys." I stated.
"Probably." Dan agreed.
"I don't see what the big deal is." I said. "You're only riding your bikes home."
"Well, us being the "bad boys" in town, we always get that look." Phil said.
"But you haven't done anything bad lately though." I said.
"Well, thanks to the news, we still are." Dan said. "All these vandalisms and robberies that we didn't do yet we're still blamed for."
"What made you guys start doing those things?" I asked.
"In middle school, we were bullied." Phil explained. "So when we started high school, we wanted to change who we were. So that's when we became bad."
"The first few times we were arrested and got in trouble." Dan continued. "But with all the stuff we continued to do, they just eventually let it go, which surprised us. Then things grew old and we just stopped. Now these crimes are continuing, but by another person, or group of people, but we're still being blamed for it."
"Do you have any ideas to who it might be?" I asked.
Phil shrugged. "We think it may be these group of kids we've hung out with a few times at lunch."
"I've had my suspicion about them." I told them. "But Avery and some other people disagree with that."
"I would just stop listening to the damn rumors." Dan said. "They're getting really annoying."
"True..." I agreed.

I then stopped as I looked at my house.

"No wonder you heard us the other night." Phil said. "I remember stopping here when Dan and I were talking about the situation."
"This is your house?" Dan asked. I nodded. "It's too nice of a place for my liking."
I looked at them. "Why, where do you guys live?"
"In an apartment building downtown." Phil responded. "We live next door to one another so that's why we always ride bikes to school and stuff."
"Oh." I said.

I looked back over to my house.

"Well, I guess I should start heading in and doing my homework and stuff." I told them.
"Alright." Dan said.
"We should do this more often." Phil said. "I kinda like it."
"Well, if Avery is at this club every week, then sure, maybe we can." I said.
"Great!" Dan smiled.

As I saw the two of them smile once again, I could no longer see two scary, tough looking guys. I could see two happy, friendly guys who looked like they just needed a friend.

"Well, I guess we'll see you tomorrow!" Phil said.
"You too!" I nodded.

I watched as the two of them rode off in their bikes before I finally went inside of my house.

The next day, as Avery and I walked into the school, I noticed the bike rack empty. Neither Dan nor Phil were here. Which was strange because they were usually here.

During Chemistry, Phil wasn't there. Of course, it was a lab day, so I had to do the entire experiment with another group of people if I wanted to pass it.

During English, Dan wasn't there. Even though many students seemed relief at the thought, I was confused and somewhat worried.

Neither Dan nor Phil were at lunch either.

"I guess it must be one of their cutting days." Avery assumed to me. "I wouldn't worry about it too much."

I didn't say anything, I only nodded.

Although this wasn't just one day. This lasted the entire rest of the week. Each day I grew more and more concerned.

Why weren't they in school? Was something really going on? Were they just sick? Or did they not want to actually bother with me??
