Chapter Ten: Make Your Own Path

There had never been a kiss so romantic and beautiful in this lifetime. It was a kiss of true love. The two didn't know it, but they had loved each other and had been destined to be together since they were children. Whatever you believe, if it is that the universe made ways to bring them together or that God had a plan for them, they were soulmates.

     It was the next morning when Scarlet, Lucas, Nightshade, and even Abu had realized that they had arrived at New York. "We made it!" Lucas exclaimed, grabbing hold of Scarlet's hand. Scarlet looked at their combined hands, then up at the big city, and finally down at her horse. "Thank you, Nightshade," she whispered with a neigh in reply.  "So... now what?" asked Lucas. Scarlet had no idea what to do next. She didn't know where to look or where she might find the gem. She didn't know.

     Suddenly, both of the jewelry seemed to be trying to communicate with her, they were leading her somewhere. Scarlet and Lucas tied the horses up and Lucas followed her wherever she was going. She closed her eyes and allowed them to lead her, she trusted them for they were a part of her now.

     "Scarlet?" Lucas tried to get her attention, but she seemed to be in some sort of trance, "Scarlet where are we going?", "People are starting to stare. Open your eyes.", "Talk to me." These statements were none of which Scarlet heard, she continued to follow where they were telling her to go.

     Eventually, Scarlet came to an abrupt stop and opened her eyes. Then she looked up and pointed, "It's up there." Lucas thought that she had gone crazy, "There's no way that it's on the top of the Statue of Liberty." Scarlet shook her head, "I know it is." she said this more to herself than Lucas.

     Scarlet was running off again with Lucas struggling to keep up, "What are we doing now?" he asks.
"There are two ways you can get to the top. You can either get to the pedestal or the crown." Scarlet replied. They ran up to the side of it, weaving their way through the crowd.
Unfortunately, they were stopped by a security guard, "Tickets please?" he said.
"You need tickets?" Lucas whispered to Scarlet.
"It's New York!" she replied "Sorry, sir, but we need to get up there... my f-family is in there and there and they have my ticket. I-I got separated from them because of this crowd."
The security guard was not convinced, "If you can point them out to me, I'll let you up."

Fortunately, Scarlet had a talent for thinking quickly, "Oh wait. There they are. Sorry for the inconvenience, sir."

     Scarlet and Lucas walked away with disappointment in their faces. "Now what do we do?" Lucas questioned. "We'll need to sneak in there." Scarlet proposed. "But how?" she thought for a second before coming up with a plan, "Come on!"

     Lucas was going to make a distraction to drive the guards away so Scarlet could get up to the top, and that's almost what happened before Scarlet got caught. "There on to us," says Lucas "I don't know what's left to do." Scarlet wouldn't give up, "There's only one last thing to do!" They headed to the nearest store with little notice that they had been watched the whole time.

     They bought climbing gear, it was super dangerous, the plan seemed impossible, and it was a near definite suicide mission, but it was the only way they could get up there. "Why can't we just buy tickets?" Lucas asked. "Why can't you stop asking questions?" Scarlet snapped, gearing up. "Can't you go to your parent's house and get some money?" Scarlet scoffed, "If they find me not in Tennessee I'm dead!" Lucas furrowed his eyebrows, "If you fall you'll be dead!" Scarlet's expression changed, "I'll be careful, okay?" she kissed him "This is just something I have to do... I love you."

     They were hidden behind some brush and as close to the wall as possible so they wouldn't be caught right away. It took them a while to set up, but soon Scarlet was ready to climb. "This is insane!" Lucas cried, panicked. "I know, but this whole situation is insane." And she was climbing.

     At first, no one noticed, but as she got nearer and neared to the top, people below began to scream and soon the police and an ambulance arrived. They had speakers and were pleading with her to come down. It wasn't long before they found Lucas, but he needed to stay where he was or she could fall and die.

     As Scarlet got closer to the top, it became more of a struggle to climb and she slipped, everyone below her gasped, but she got her grip again. There were firefighters in the crown ready to get her, but she wasn't going to the crown, she was going to the torch. Something was telling her the gem was in the torch.

     Scarlet grabbed one of the flames and hoisted herself up to the top, she stayed there for a while to catch her breath not daring to look down. She began searching it before finally finding it. The garnet. She pulled out a necklace chain and put the garnet on it. Then she held all three jewels together.

     Soon she realized the jig was up and let the firefighter pull her up to safety.
"We know why you were up there," one said.
"What?" she asked.
"Yeah, we already have your little boyfriend," another stated.
"Who are you?"
"Give us the precious stone!" the third commanded.
"No!" but before she could run away, they grabbed her and their grip was too strong for her to escape and the last thing she saw was Lucas tied up before she was thrown in a truck and blacked out.
