Summer vacation at her great aunt and uncle's farm was definitely not what Scarlet Baker expected as a "surprise" vacation. She had hoped for a get-away to Palm Springs to go shopping and relax at the pool. Or go to Hawaii and learn the language and eat delicious fruit. But NO! She had to spend the entire summer doing chores in the hot sun at a dumb farm in Tennessee.
The taxi arrived early that morning to drive Scarlet to the airport. Tears in their eyes, her parents waved her goodbye. Scarlet groaned, "I don't want to go!" she mumbled to herself. "I want to stay in New York." She was sixteen years old, had fiery-red hair, green eyes with just a hint of blue, and fair skin that would not do well in the sun.
Once on the plane, Scarlet put her luggage in the carry-on compartment above her head. For hours, she'd stare blankly at the seat in front of her. Scarlet's mom and dad wouldn't let her bring any electronical devices, but she snuck her cell phone anyway. There was no wifi on the plane, so it was unusable.
The airplane finally landed a quarter after midnight. Surely, her aunt and uncle would be fast asleep by now, so Scarlet started walking. She read the address from the crumpled piece of paper; just by the sight of it, you could tell it had been folded and unfolded many times.
Scarlet reached the farmhouse and knocked on the door. After a long wait, the wooden door creaked open, "Come in! Come in!" said a soft voice. It was her great aunt's. Uncle Ed was sitting at the table reading a newspaper and sipping at his coffee. "Ed, please lead your niece to her room." Uncle Ed just sat there and continued reading the day's paper, clearly trying to get out of getting up "Ed!?" He grunted and folded the newspaper. Scarlet then followed her great uncle up the creaky steps of the staircase to the second door on the left.
It was a decent sized room, although she hated to admit it. Ed slammed the door behind him, causing Scarlet to jump. She washed, dressed, and unpacked before sliding into bed. It hadn't been two minutes before she was fast asleep.
The rooster crowed at 6 o' clock the next morning. Scarlet made a deep inarticulate sound, "Is this how it's going to be everyday!?" she asked herself. A few minutes later, she sat up I'm not going to let it be!
A.N/ Sorry I didn't update yesterday! I had a Cross Country race, but it was the last day. I'm still going to update "Alternative," today so thanks for your patience! :)
