CHAPTER 8

"That was really great Ashton." My mom smiles as she pulls her headset off.

Ashton gives us a thumbs up and pulls off his headset.

My hands fiddle with the strap on my camera. I wasn't actually allowed to record him playing due to copyright issues and other junk like that.

The only thing flowing through my mind right now is that awful night.

"Hi, can I help you?" I ask the policeman nicely.

"Are you Elizabeth Ellis?" He asks me.

"No that's my mom." I reply.

I haven't watched anyone play drums live since...him.

"I'm Elizabeth Ellis." My mom says, walking up behind me. "Is everything okay?"

"Are you the mother of Cameron Ellis?"

"What's wrong with Cameron?" I ask, my heart starts to race.

"Yes I am." She chokes out.

My palms are sweating and my eyes are glossing over.

"Him and a girl, Alice Mayview, were hit by a drunk driver and were pronounced dead at the scene. I'm so sorry for your loss."

"Jordyn?" I hear my mom ask. "Are you okay?"

"...and were pronounced dead at the scene."

I blink my eyes closed and hot tears run down my cheeks. Shaking my head, I get up from the chair.

The three other boys stay where they are, looking between my mom and I, not knowing what to do.

I don't blame them.

How many of their producers' daughters have started crying during the drum recording?

This would probably have to be the first.

I can see Ashton's look of confusion through my blurry vision.

I shake my head again and rush out of the room.

The tears were now coming out in endless streams. My body was shaking, my feet were making my body run.

I couldn't necessarily see where I was going but I knew there was an exit around the corner.

I threw my arms out in front of me and pushed open the door.

My hands gripped the railings on the stairs until my knuckles turned ghost white.

Endless sobs wrack my body.

I sway back and forth trying to calm myself down.

"Cameron, Alice, Cameron, Alice." I mutter to myself.

I hear the creaking of the door behind me. I expect to hear my mother's voice any second now.

"Jordyn." It wasn't hers, it was his.

Ashton.

He places his hand on my back.

My hands release from the railing and I turn around to face him.

He puts his arms open for me.

I take his offer and his strong arms wrap around me.

His shirt gets balled up in my hands as I clench them into fists.

"Why? Why? WHY?" I cry into his chest.

He rests his head on top of mine and hugs me tighter.

My eyes close and the hyperventilating begins.

"Shhhh, it's gonna be okay Jordyn, it's gonna be okay."
