By quarter to eleven, the plane was coming in to land in Edinburgh, Scotland. I sighed as Aurora woke, screaming. Her ears were popping due to the pressure in the plane. Typical, the final stretch and she woke up. It would probably take half an hour to calm her down, and by that stage, my family would probably think I was an incapable mother.
I was just heading into the baggage collection area when I heard: "there she is! She's there, the one in red with the baby in her arms!" I recognised that voice.
It was my fathers. I walked into the baggage collection area and suddenly the ground was shaking, and there were people screaming my name. A whole mob of Scots, running at me.
Jesus Christ, it was going to be a long week.
My brother removed Aurora from my arms and he left me to be attacked by my parents and old friends from school. There were only three people that did not attempt to hug me or talk to me and they just stood back and watched it all. Andrew, Stuart and...
"What's he doing here?" I asked my mother, staring at HIM viciously. "Mother, I want nothing to do with him. Why is he here?"
"I thought it would be a nice surprise, Abi darling," she said, smiling joyfully. "Don't you miss him even a little bit?"
"No, mother. I don't." I marched over to the third guy that was in my welcoming party. I walked right up to him and I went right into his face and hissed: "I don't want you here. My parents are convinced we're going to get back together. We're not. So fuck off and stop trying to ruin my life. All over again."
"I want to see my daughter," Cal said, standing his ground.
"She's not yours. Her father is in England."
"Well, that's bull," Cal laughed. I looked deep into his dark brown eyes - they were nearly black. His eyes were the same colour as his hair, which was short and flat. You know how some boys spike up their hair - Cal never did. He was fairly short for his age, only a few inches taller than me. He was burly and well built - a rugby player.
Fuck, I like the rugby players, don't I!
"I didn't say he was her biological father," I said, "but he's been better than you have been. Where were you at Aurora's birth? At her Christening? When I was pregnant and getting the scans? You wanted nothing to do with me or my baby. And I was in love with you. Now? Now I couldn't care less about you, Cal. So fuck off and move on. I have."
"You piece of shit," Cal started, "you whore, you - you fucking slag!"
"I think it's best you leave. This is time for me, my family and my friends. You don't make the cut I'm afraid," I told him without remorse. I didn't care. I shrugged my shoulders and turned my back on him, walking to the group that was crowed around Andrew and Aurora. I smiled at them all and made my way to the rotating luggage belt, picking up my suitcase as it made it's way along.
"Darling, where are your other suitcases?" my mother asked.
"This is the only one I need for a week," I told her.
"A week - darling, you're not going back!"
"I think you'll find I am. I need to finish off my education down in England. So I shall be returning home on the twenty-ninth. I've got everything sorted. But I won't be taking this suitcase back down with me. I don't need these clothes down there - it's too..."
"Hostile? Stupid? Fucked up?" My brother suggested.
"No, too warm down there for these clothes."
"Oh," he said.
"Let's go back to Dunbar."
