As their love teetered on the edge between hope and goodbyes, the two wandered the streets of New York.
Did Nichola know her way around the cities? No, of course not. However the compass app on her iPhone helped her, and all she knew was what direction to go. Now not the most practical way of travelling across the country, but what other choice did she have?
Though her parents were littered with thousands, her parents did not know of the breakup. They couldn't know. They'd only make the two make up, for her parents trusted him with their one and only prized daughter.
For if her parents knew the truth, the lies, the sacrifice, the scars and betrayal, maybe, just maybe, they'd take her side. If they knew her thoughts from day one, she wouldn't be in this situation. If they knew a single thing about their own daughter instead of being enveloped in money.
"Ah yes, our daughter Nichola Alice Astherbe. Yes we do know our daughter. Her favourite colour is pink, and she has blond short hair. She is very popular at her school, but not very smart." They'd say.
On quite the contrary, Anne and Leo. Her name was Nichola Fae Astherbe, her favourite colour is olive green, her hair mid-back length wavy brown locks, she is quite smart, but not at all popular.
Now Nichola didn't want to particularly go to her parents, for she knew shame and shuns were in her future as to par being in the state of California.
Quite sad actually, if you ask me. There was love there, the Astherbe seniors knew how to love. But only for their money and themselves, that was the problem. They had created Nichola only for the great wealth of themselves, praying to God every night for their daughter to bring as much fortune to the Astherbe name as they had.
Anyways, as the two of them walked the streets of busy New York, the sun slowly began to set, and soon the chills of the city were getting to them.
Suddenly, Jack remembered. He could never let down his end of the deal, for it could risk the love he would be spending half a year for. He reached into his back pocket, fishing for the paper.
They neared a cafe, and thus they settled down in the old plastic chairs of the small deserted restaurant. They both sat down across from eachother, staring at only the one on the other side of the table.
He put the letter on the surface, gently sliding it across the wood towards his love. He leaned back into the booth, staring at the girl with curious eyes.
Hey Nichola.. So it's 2:36 AM right now, and you're asleep. God I miss your touch so much. I wish I'd never done what I did. And- I just- this is hard. I'm not good with my emotions, you know that Nich. I'm the one causing you to walk across the country from Connecticut to California. I'm the reason, and that hurts. Nichola I've never loved someone like I've loved you, I don't think I ever will. I could have anything. I could be a billionaire with people loving me left and right, with everything my selfish side wanted, but now, all my selfish side wants is you. I only want your love, my Nichola. I wish someday we'd grow old together, with a nice family with kids and grandchildren, everything. I won't stop until your mine even if I have to walk across the country for it.
My dear Nichola, will you please make that dream, that selfish dream, come true? Will you, Nichola Fae Astherbe, marry me?
She didn't expect him to remember the deal, but he did. And he would continue that for as long as it would take.
