Merlin walked into his and Gaius's chambers exhausted. He had just defeated another sorcerer, who had used a lot of fire. Causing Merlin to be covered in soot and scorches.
"Gaius!?" He shouts for his mentor. But receives no response. He enters his room to get changed.
Now in clean cloths, he exits his room to see Uther standing there. Arms crossed, staring at the boy.
"Marvin." The king acknowledged the warlock. Merlin wince as the king said his name wrong.
"Can I help you, Sire?" Merlin hated the word, Sire. He hated saying it to Arthur, his friend because he didn't like to think that Arthur was more important. He hated it more to say it to Uther. Because he knew Uther thought that he was better, when really he wasn't.
"No, I just came to talk. Melrin." Uther said walking closer to the boy as he once agin wince at the false attempt on his name.
"Well, Gaius isn't here at the moment. I honestly do-" Merlin started but was soon cut off by Uther.
"I'm here to talk to you." Merlin's heart stopped. Why would Uther want to talk to him? What did he do? Did Uther know of his magic?
"You see last night I was going down to the caves under Camelot to check on the dragon. But, it would seem that I wasn't the only one who went to talk to the dragon. By the time I went down there I could already hear his voice. Talking to someone he referred to as 'Young Warlock'. Now I was shocked that a sorcerer, or warlock as he put it, found its way into the castle and down to the caves without detection. I heard the two talk of a sorcerer who was after my son. And on how to stop said, sorcerer." By the time Uther reached this point in his speech he sat down and gestured for Merlin to do the same. Merlin sat down still not showing any emotions. But Merlin felt as though he was about to scream.
"As their conversation continued I realized that this 'warlock' was on our side. Making sure I wasn't seen I shot a glance into the cave, to see you." Uther leaned back into his chair.
Merlin knew that the fear he was feeling was on his face. He was sure that Uther was here to kill him.
"Where do you think that leaves us Merlin?" Merlin looked up shocked as the king said his real name.
"That leaves me at your mercy." Merlin quickly looked back down at the floor.
"I could do one of two things. One, I could kill you for using magic to save my son and myself multiple times." Merlin felt his stomach churn.
"Or two, I could make you my unofficial magical advisor." Merlin had almost fainted.
"Excuse my interruption Sire, but.... did you just say 'unofficial magical advisor'?" Merlin searched the mans face for any sign of lies.
"Merlin I know nothing of what you have done. In favour of Camelot or against it. But as much as I dislike it, Arthur would not stand to see you die. Nor would Morgana and Gaius. So I will do what would be best for everyone. Keep it a secret." Merlins eyebrows went so high that Uther swore they were as high of not higher than Gaius's.
"Why?" Was all Merlin could say. Why wasn't he dead? Why did Uther speak to him like an equal not a sorcerer? Why was Uther suddenly Pro-Magic?
"Are you enchanted?" Merlin said out of nowhere. He almost went to feel Uthers forehead with his hand but then remembered that he was not Arthur. And Uther could have him killed at any moment.
"I assure you I am under perfect health. You are alive because of what you have done for Arthur and all of Camelot. Although I would like to ask you the same question. Why?"
"It's my destiny. Some men are born to tend fields, some men to create swords and armour, some to become great kings. Me, I was born to protect and serve Arthur. It was said in Druid proficiency that I am Emrys. Magic itself. And I am to protect Arthur, so he can be the best king the would has ever known, the king that units all of Albion. And he's my best friend." Merlin looked at Uther to see that he was smiling.
"My son is to do that?" Uther sounded so proud it made Merlin smile.
"That and so much more." The look on Uthers face was priceless. He had never seen Uther look so happy. Suddenly Uther stood.
"I will come to you whenever I believe sorcery is the cause."
"I will never attack anyone in-"
"I know. I mean I will come to you when your help is needed." With a nod he left.
Just as Uther left Gaius walked in.
"Was that Uther?" All Merlin could do was nod.
"What did he want?"
"Oh you know, just to tell me that since I have magic I will become his 'unofficial magical advisor.' Am I enchanted?" Merlin wondered aloud and pinched himself. "Ow."
"What!?"
"One pratdragon down. One to go." Merlin joked and laughed.
Uther who was standing just outside the door to listen in smiled. There was no way this kid would attack Camelot.
