Half & Half

Chapter Two

Jacob knew Renesmee wouldn’t come to any real harm but none the less he would still protect her, there was a certain air of uncertainty whenever she was around the wolf pack. On one hand they were friendly to her because she was Jacob’s mate/imprintee, but on the other she was still half vampire and an unknown entity in terms of no one knew not even the wise wolves, what Renesmee would grow up to be capable of.  The wolves knew she was no real threat to them but the limits to which they could go to with her were not clear, she could eat human food and go out in mild daylight but in regards to her having to have human blood too, that area was well avoided in conversation whenever they were all together.

Quil, Jared, Embry and Seth all jumped down from the closest line of trees before bounding up the sand to meet Jacob and Renesmee. Jacob could have sworn he had heard more than four wolves but maybe the rest didn’t feel like spending time with the oddest couple in town. Seth as usual was the first to go up and embrace Renesmee in a tight bear-like hug, smiling from ear to ear as he lifted her off the ground. “Good to see you again Ness, how ya been?” Renesmee on being put down regained some of her stolen breath and she smiled, “I’m good.” She nodded, still not an over-talker even when in the company of some quite chatty people such as the Quileute boys.  Jacob had moved aside and was currently being tormented by Jared and Embry trying to wrestle him to the ground, Seth and Renesmee couldn’t help but be amused by this as they stood watching.

After all the greetings were said between one another, things settled down into the usual pattern of events. Quil, Jared, Embry and Seth all played their version of beach football….shirtless, as Renesmee and Jake leisurely lay side by side on an old tribal blanket.  It was both hard and easy to be together in public or in the company of the wolf boys, Jacob wanted more than anything to reach out and just hold Renesmee close but he was secretly afraid that she wouldn’t be ready for the next level in their relationship. To Renesmee at the moment Jacob was the in the highest levels a best friend could get, and Jacob was worried that if he confessed to her, he would push those levels too much to cross to the next stage.  Unbeknown to Jacob that Renesmee was actually crying out inside for him to take it further, this was the ever classic couple’s dilemma, both are madly in love with the other but equally don’t want to hurt or ruin completely what they have. Love is quite the cruel mistress where these two are concerned.

The game came to an end no more than half an hour after it started, with Jared grumbling at how hungry he was and Seth and Embry teasing him over it. Jacob and Renesmee stood up and rolled up the blanket, tying it up with a withered brown leather blanket tie, to keep the blanket’s shape. Jacob looked up at Renesmee after chucking the rolled up blanket into Seth’s arms, catching him off guard by the unexpected object. “Hey Ness, you want to come back to mine? Is that alright?” Renesmee looked up at the now darkening sky as the last of the day hovered above them; she then looked towards home and exhaled. “I better go home tonight, maybe tomorrow?” despite his hidden disappointment, Jacob smiled and nodded. He knew it was better to pre-arrange a late night visit with Edward first than doing it behind his back like he used to with Bella, which never turned out well. “Let’s go then.” He said as he turned around phasing once more into the colour that became one of Renesmee’s favourites. Hopping onto his back again they set off for the cottage, always a hub of activity with two non-sleeping residents.

On arriving back at the cottage, Jacob could hear that Edward was waiting for them with Bella not far from him in the same room. Letting Renesmee down he quickly phased back, going through the now routine sequence, as he put his shirt on fully he turned back to Renesmee. “I know your dad can hear me but I just wanted to say goodnight, like this.” His tan hand slid into her paler hand, raising it up to his lips as they touched her hand with the softest of touches. “Goodnight Renesmee.” He said grinning and jogging off before she could object. Standing blushing and stunned, Renesmee smiled. She thought it was pretty sweet of him to try something new and risky with her over-protective father around, it amused her greatly as she turned on her heel and with the same content smile, opened the door and closed it behind her going into the cottage.

Right as Renesmee turned from closing the door, Edward was almost flush onto her as he stood with his arms crossed in front of her, not in the slightest sense mad but just being a concerned father to his only daughter. “Did you have a good night?” Renesmee nodded as she scooted along the wall to a safe, non-awkward, distance from him. “He asked you back to his didn’t he? Why didn’t you go?” without even having to reply he could hear her planning out what she would say before she could say it, with an unneeded exhale he uncrossed his arms and stepped to her and stroked her hair. “I’m not an ogre Renesmee, I would have let you but calling would have been plenty of notice. I give credit to him for sticking to my rules but next time just go okay?” he smiled his charming smile as Bella watched on contently. “Okay dad.” She said as she wrapped her arms around him, locking them around the small of his back. By Edward letting her know this she felt a great sense of happiness knowing that tomorrow she could spend more time with Jacob, she was relieved.
