Half & Half

Chapter Twenty-Four

When the morning came around, Edward took it upon himself to be the one to console Renesmee if necessary, when she woke up. Bella was close by as always in case things needed just a hint of a mother’s touch, his bond with Renesmee ran just as deep as Bella’s, but the emotional side was what connected her and Renesmee closer, the human emotional side of them both still was very much a part of both of their personalities. Knocking on the door he before he arrived could hear she was already awake, what she was doing on the other side of the door was a mystery.

“Renesmee, sweetheart. Can I come in please?” he said softly.

    “Yes.”

Renesmee’s voice was softer than usual, a tell-tale sign that something wasn’t quite right, not wrong, just not as normal as things would be on the average morning. Edward went in as he normally would do, hopefully showing Renesmee that he wasn’t going any different on her because of what happened the night before.

“Renesmee, how are you? Are you alright?”

She turned around; her hair was slightly messier with the occasional lock out of place, looking like she’d not long woken up from a troubled sleep or no sleep at all.

    “I’m fine.”

“Would you like something to eat? Or drink?”

    “Drink, please.”

Edward nodded as he steadily placed himself next to her, leaving no more than a few inches between them.

    “O-negative?”

Renesmee nodded, her eyes darting back down to her lap as she waited for him to continue. Edward if he could would exhale, since there was no need for that he wrapped his arm around her back, his hand gently holding onto her shoulder, bringing her snuggly to his side.

“I’m here for you, okay? Whether you want to talk about it or not, this will pass I promise you. Couples encounter many situations during the duration of their relationship, what Jacob said last night, it may feel like a big thing to you but look at it this way. His refusal to you is fate’s way of telling you that this isn’t the right time, it’s not meant to happen. Things happen when they’re meant to happen, and when they do, depending on what it is, can make a person feel like waiting an eternity was worth it. If you know what I mean.”

Looking at Renesmee, it seems as if a light had been turned on in her mind, something had hit home in her head from what Edward had been trying to convey to her in the most sensitive manor possible. She leaned slightly away from him, looking up at his face in order for him to see her expression as she replied.

“So what you’re saying is, he wasn’t saying no because he didn’t love or want me, he’s saying no because deep down he knows it’s not the time or place for the two of us? He’s waiting for when the moment clicks for us both, so he’s really thinking long-term circumstances for when it will be magical and memorable? He just didn’t want to hurt me.” she whispered the last sentence, coming to a realisation in what Jacob did the night before, and what Edward was telling her now.

Proud of his daughter, Edward softly rubbed her back and kissed the top of her head, nodding in approval of her statement.

“Exactly, Renesmee he loves you from the bottom of his heart, and as much as I would like to keep him from getting too close to you, there’s a time in everyone’s life where it has to happen regardless what anyone has to think. He wouldn’t do anything to purposely hurt you, in a twisted way this is even a way of him protecting you without doing anything.” He smiled softly as he kissed the top of her head again. “Come and eat breakfast sweetheart, then think of what you want to do, it’s totally up to you.” He smiled and left the room casually, leaving her to ponder for a moment before coming to the breakfast table for their morning blood.

She knew he was right, deep down she couldn’t argue with what he said, coming to the realisation that Jacob was doing what was best for her, and she shook her head free of any bad thoughts. The fatherly advice given to her by Edward cooled any quarrelling fires lurking in the back of her mind, if Edward was good for one thing above all else, it was his way with his words, comforting yet serious thanks to the influence left on him by Esme over the years.

When she emerged from her room, Renesmee could smell the freshly poured blood, it sang to her like a siren’s call pulling a lost sailor back into land. Standing at the end of the small hallway, Bella smiled with her hand outstretched in front of her, waiting for the touch of her daughters hand to lead her to the table.

“Mom” Renesmee said softly, smiling as she walked over to Bella, slotting her hand into her mothers, the pair walking with equal grace to the table where over the next hour they talked calmly and casually about the plans for the day.

Over at Emily’s Jacob stood on the porch with a glass of brandy in his hand, he wasn’t a drinker at all but he would need the courage Sam provided him with for when he would meet Renesmee again, unbeknown to him that she had thought things over.

“Jake.” Said a soft voice from behind him.

Stood next to him now was the delicate form of Emily, looking out onto the greenery surrounding her home.

“She’ll come around, we always do. I’m not the first to admit a woman’s fault but, too often we jump the gun assuming the worst before a man has time to explain the truth.”

Jacob blinked at her words, his wordless response telling her to continue.

“Sometimes, when you’ve not experienced something and your every being tells you that you want it, when you don’t get what you want, you go into a state of refusal and doubt. My guess is that’s exactly what Renesmee has done, but if I know her like I knew her mother, it’ll be a fleeting feeling, she loves you Jake and that won’t change no matter what you say.” Emily smiled and rubbed his upper back, soothing his worried mind at her mere touch.

Putting his glass down without having drunk a single drop, Jacob swiftly embraced Emily with a bright smile.

“Thanks Emily, thank you, thank you, thank you.” He said quickly before phasing halfway down the front garden, padding his way quickly towards the direction of the cottage.

Jacob’s paws couldn’t get him there quick enough, the warm feeling of love taking over all of his senses as he got closer. The feeling was strangely strong to him as he neared the clearing he regularly met Renesmee in, and before he knew it something hit him. He skidded to a stop with a warm feeling on his chest, looking down he saw Renesmee clinging to him. Nudging her to face the tree, he phased back and pulled on his clothes, turning around to face her.

“Renesmee.”  He said, surprised to see her here.

“Jacob”. She retorted softly, stepping closer until her arms were around him. Jacob reciprocated and wrapped his arms around her, holding each other closely they stood silent in the warm embrace that spoke a thousand words.
