Half & Half

Chapter Twenty-Six

Thankfully La Push beach was empty; it was most of the time, except for when you really wanted to be alone with your loved one, then the whole world and its wife seemed to turn up. Their hands remained held together right up until they reached the pebbly shore, despite a snap decision to take Renesmee to the beach; Jacob seemed to have devised some sort of makeshift picnic-like set up all waiting for them as they approached.

“You planned this?” Renesmee turned to face Jacob, her hand sliding out of his as she smiled softly.

Jacob shook his head, equally as happily stunned as she.

“Nope, though I have a feeling someone saw this coming and planned ahead for us.” He chuckled softly, helping her sit down on one side of the blanket as he bent down opening the wicker basket.

Renesmee smiles as she watches him bring out a combination of things for the both of them, various sandwich with different fillings, some cans of pop and a concealed bottle of O-negative blood for Renesmee, in a steel bottle so Jacob wouldn’t have to see it sloshing around before it would trickle down Renesmee’s throat.

“This looks delicious. Smells like Alice and Emily worked on this together.” Renesmee said as she took the steel bottle off Jacob, so not to make him uncomfortable for too long.

Jacob nodded as he sat down.

“I still can’t get over that they’re all interacting with each other, I mean it’s nice but I still expect something to happen at any minute. Like we all respect each other now but each of them have their own personality that could clash with someone else, but I don’t think it will happen thank God.” He turned and looked at Renesmee, who was wiping the side of her hand over her mouth skilfully removing the traces of the blood.

She nodded and closed the lid of the bottle.

“Mm. But I like it, at least when things happen like with Kairisha and the other vampire, we can all get along and act as one big family rather than two sides of a coin.”

“Very philosophical Ness, you swallowed a thesaurus or something?” he chuckled as she thumped his shoulder playfully.

“No, and besides, it sounds like you’re using most of you brain with words like ‘philosophical’, does your head hurt?” she smirked back as the two burst out laughing, teasing each other was their way of healing the bad wounds left by the night before, making it all better.

Short work was made of the sandwiches, Renesmee now was laying down with her head in Jacob’s lap as he stroked her hair lovingly. The sun was about to go down and the stars soon to make an appearance, this was most likely the calm before the storm, the final time that anyone could relax before it would all kick off, if it was meant to be.

“Jacob?” Rensemee asked out of the blue, her eyes focused on the sinking sun.

“Yes Ness?” Jacob looked down at her, for him she was more beautiful than any sunset.

“If we are to be separated, I know it would be harder on you what with the whole imprinting thing, but please for my sake, just keep yourself alive. I can handle being apart, yes it will be hard on me too, but I couldn’t think if you were worrying about me. Worrying about me won’t keep you alive, thinking about yourself will. Whoever you’re with, keep them alive too. Please.” She pleaded, desperate to make him understand her.

Jacob exhaled softly, he turned her chin with his finger, he smiled down at her with all the warmth he had within him.

“Ness, it’s natural for me to worry about you and I don’t think I could ever not worry about you, but, I will try for our sakes. It’s like me asking you to not worry about me, impossible right?” he stroked her cheek with the lightest of touches. “I’ll keep my promise to you, I’ll keep myself alive with the thought of coming back into your arms, and will that be alright?”

Renesmee’s eyes welled up with raw emotion at the deep love within his words; she sniffled wiping away the welling tears in her sparking eyes.

“That’s perfect Jacob, so perfect.” She said as his face drew nearer to hers.

Their lips touched as the sun went down along the ocean’s horizon, casting them in a shadow with a glow all around them, symbolising their love for one another with a kiss at a moment meant for lovers. Jacob held the back of her head gently as all love one another felt was poured into the kiss they would not experience for a while to come.

Once back safely at home, Renesmee sought the comfort from Bella in any qualms she had left, ones that she couldn’t burden Jacob with when alone with him earlier. Jacob had gone back to the main house to hear the latest update on the situation. Edward stood outside the house, despite hearing everything he was allowing them to have some mother-daughter time, also allowing the plans from the main house available to his ears so he didn’t have to leave. He was rather surprised at what he heard.

Jacob stood with a perplexed look on his face, as did the rest of the family that were left in the main house, Carlisle stood beside Alice, he just gave the latest update as soon as Jacob arrived back from his date alone with Renesmee.

“So what you’re saying is, they’ve gone back to Volterra? But why? What’s their reason for that? They seemed so sure as to start something in the next week.” Jacob said as he leaned against the side wall, facing the family face on.

“From what I could see, they want to confuse us, to make us rethink our strategy and to question our methods. They know about me so that’s why we’re at a dead end.” Alice piped up.

“The only reason aside from that what Alice just said, is they may want to report back to Aro, but why if he can see by reading her hand?” Carlisle rubbed his forehead, equally as perplexed as the rest of his family.

Jasper exchanged a look with Alice as she moved back to his side, wisely, Emmett held his tongue from what he could say at this moment for the sake of keeping Rosalie’s qualms at bay. Esme sat on the couch with Carlisle now standing behind her, one hand on her shoulder as all stood thinking about the various reasons. Then it came to Jacob, as the one who liked to question things, his quick thinking came up with a possible link between the two rogue vampires and their relation to Aro.

“Maybe, just maybe, they’re reporting to Aro on some act of loyalty of some description.”

At the moment he said that, all eyes snapped to Alice’s face at the sound of her gasp. She was having a vision.

    “Oh no.” she whispered.

“What is it Alice?” Jasper said as he moved some hair behind her shoulder.

Alice snapped out of her vision, quickly exchanging a worried look with Jasper before looking at the rest of the family.

    “They demanded a bargaining chip.”

Emmett looked up from Rosalie’s face.

    “What bargaining chip?”

A look from Carlisle to Alice gave her the inner strength she needed to utter one word.

    “Renesmee.”
