Half & Half

Chapter Twenty-Eight

  Renesmee blinked, she could not believe what she had just heard.

  Jacob stood equally as stunned, he could read Edward’s uneasiness on his face despite agreeing to this new plan. He had heard what Edward had thought, his very core was shocked at the thought of his dear Renesmee, lying lifeless and dead.

    “No.” Jacob objected. “I-I can’t…”

  Renesmee curiously looked at Jacob, it was plainly obvious that there was something wrong and she wasn’t happy at it being kept from her.

    “Jacob Black, tell me what’s the matter, please.” She pleaded.

  Bracing himself, Jacob prepared to tell her. He never expected to have to ever tell this to her, just the thought of it ever possible made him the saddest he’s ever felt.

    “Renesmee…” he stroked her hair, facing her front on. “…you, you are to…you are to die.” His eyes clouded over with pure pain, he had not seen the vision directly, but it affected him just the same.

    “What?”

    “I’m so sorry.” Tears that had pricked Jacob’s eyes spilled down his cheeks, showing how much this was hurting him, even just to think about it.

  Renesmee wiped away his tears with her thumb, caressing his cheeks comforting him, as she always has done when he felt upset.

    “Alice…” she softly called Alice’s name, bringing her out from Jasper’s embrace to in front of her and Jacob.

  Bella had come from Edward’s side to stand with Jacob, her cold hand clasping Jacob’s letting him know that she was there for him as well as Renesmee. Edward stood at her side, amazed at how emotional Jacob really got over his daughter, proving how much she really meant to him, crying the tears he wish he could shed.

    “Yes baby?”

    “Can you tell me the vision, everything from beginning to end.” It amazed everyone at how calm Renesmee was through what it pained Jacob to say, her strong side like her mother from when she was human, poking out and making a strong stand not letting this overcome her senses.

  Alice nodded, taking Renesmee’s hand she took her over to the couch Bella laid on when expecting her, it was the place their new plan was developed when there was danger back then, and it was a good luck charm in a way.

  Bella moved around to Jacob’s front, Edward staying behind him watching them, she put her hands on his face.

  “Jake, I feel the way you do, I don’t ever want to see my little girl die either, if I could I would object to this and you know I would. But, you’ve seen how this will play out and you know she’ll be alright. You have to be there to comfort her and play your part, just like the rest of us, it will ensure yours and Seth’s safety from Kairisha and Adrienne. If you were in her shoes, would you not want to do anything to save the one you love?”

  Jacob’s eyes fell onto Bella’s face, her words had hit home a note in his heart, and something just…clicked.

    “Yes.” He whispered.

  Bella smiled, letting her hands go back down to her side. Edward joined her side once more and put his hands gently on her shoulders.

    “I would gladly sacrifice myself over and over so Bella would live.”

    “Like I’d let you do that.” Bella smirked as the two shared a quick kiss.

  Jacob couldn’t help but smirk, seeing how their love was so deep, so strong, he knew he had to search deep within himself and summon strengths unknown to him, to let this happen if he was to keep a level head.

  Over in the other part of the house, the family could hear Alice explain it all to Renesmee, Alice despite being the one to give visions also gave great comfort to Renesmee, as did Rosalie, Bella and Esme. Renesmee looked as placid as she ever was before, her face was clearly in deep thought processing all Alice was telling her, and she didn’t look like she was against it but inside Jacob could feel she was shaken.

  He walked over to the two of them when Alice was done explaining, moving off back to the family to talk it over with them what she had explained to Renesmee. Jacob took Alice’s seat and picked up Renesmee’s hands, his eyes looking at her face, her eyes raising up to meet his.

    “Nessie. This, this is a big ask. For anyone. How do you feel?”

  Renesmee exhaled softly, releasing any doubts from her that she had once she saw his eyes, they made her feel comforted and loved, reassured.

    “I’m scared, I’m not going to lie I’m scared.  But, there are many things in life for anyone that are scary, and they get through it. I never imagined I would ever have to do this, I can feel how much it’s paining you. I can’t just stand back and do nothing, I can’t just say no, Jacob if we can really pull this off you’ll be safe both you and Seth.”

  Jacob nodded, he could understand her so far.

    “I’m going to ask you something, the biggest thing I’ve ever asked of you so far.” She continued. “I want you to let me do this, I know you’ll never be okay with it and I know it will hurt you beyond imagination, something I’ve never wanted to do.” She swallowed, Jacob giving her hands a comforting squeeze.

    “It’s okay, I know. You don’t have to say anymore, I understand. You’re right, I won’t ever be okay with this but I know, I know you’re very much like Bella and nothing will convince you to change your mind once it’s made up.”

  They both chuckled at the truth of it all, she was very much like Bella in many ways, this being one of them.

    “Once we settle down on a final plan, a way of beating this without them finding out, it’ll all be okay.” Jacob stroked her cheek, leaning in and giving her a brief kiss before someone else joined them in the house.

  They got up and quickly made their way to the main room where the family all stood watching a sweaty Seth pant, catching his breath back.

    “Seth…what’re you doing here?”

  Seth looked up, standing up straight from his slumped position.

    “I’m involved in this right? I heard everything that was going on…I have an idea.”

  Jacob groaned, he knew Seth was a good kid but sometime’s his plans didn’t exactly work out.

  The family sat down once more now that it had all been brought out into the open, they prepared to start another discussion, and this time Seth was here to voice his opinion. Esme had gone and got a towel for him as he was dripping wet from his lengthy run to the house, whilst Jacob sat with Renesmee cradled on his lap. This was going to be an even longer night for them all, just when they thought it was over.
