Half & Half

Chapter Fifteen

As the sun rose up high in the sky the following morning, Jacob was up bright and early to catch the latest news on what was going on. Bella and Edward of course didn’t sleep so thanks to Edward’s handy mind-reading he could keep tabs from Alice on what was going on, or what was not going on in this case. No new news has broken through from Alice concerning Riley’s mate, Kairisha or anyone else. This slightly worried Edward as normally no news is good news, but when it came to vampires and werewolves swearing revenge in some shape or form, no news was definitely not good news.

“So, what’s happening?” a yawning Jacob said as he entered the room.

Edward shook his head as Bella held onto his hand, looking at Jacob as Edward focused on Alice’s thoughts.

“Nothing so far, I’m just waiting to hear what Carlisle thinks we should do next.”

Even now, Jacob still hated to wait for orders especially if they came from Edward. He no longer had to fight for Bella now that he had long since imprinted on Renesmee, but that habit still didn’t wean itself out. One thing he did enjoy was leaving his ‘wolf stench’ all over their couch, it amused him to see Edward getting riled up at something he couldn’t control as he did agree with Carlisle to have him stay with him and Bella.

“Well, since I’ve got nothing to do, guess I might as well mooch here for a bit.” Jacob grinned.

Bella tugged on Edward’s arm to keep him from doing anything he shouldn’t, and with a firm yet gentle glare he backed off from Jacob, answering with a simple nod as he pulled Bella into the back room to get his own back on Jacob for the mooching and the smell he was leaving behind in his on home. Jacob groaned as he should have known that it would backfire on him, now he really wished he could go see Renesmee just to escape what he’s about to hear.

Thankfully and much to his mercy, the phone rang and he was up fast so to quickly avoid hearing the soon to be core shaking noises.

“Hello? Cullen residence.” He smirked as he emphasised the name of the house.

“Hello Jacob, good morning.” It was Carlisle, Jacob could tell by his soft voice.

    “How can I help you?”

“Since Bella and Edward are other else occupied you should know what we’re planning to do today.”

Jacob nodded.

    “Fire away.”

“I personally believe it’s too dangerous to just keep still where they can track down your scent to, despite being masked by Bella and Edward. I propose you, Emmett and myself go on a small journey  out of Forks to collect any information we can from the Denali’s that they’ve heard off of their allies.”

Jacob frowned a little as though the Denali’s were allies of both the wolves and Cullens, it meant he had to deal with even more vampires, but if more information meant more knowledge on how he could keep himself and Seth safe, it would mean Renesmee would have more piece of mine so he swallowed all his inner objections and nodded.

    “I’m in.”

“I knew you would be. I’ll come down and pick you up now; I know what they’re doing to you.” Carlisle chuckled softly as he knew even that was a hard limit for Jacob.

    “I’ll be ready.”

Jacob hung up and put the phone down back on the base, he glared in the direction of the noisy couple as he left the cottage, standing just outside the door now closed behind him. He exhaled as he wish he could tell Renesmee what was going on but if she knew she would worry more since he would be temporarily leaving Forks, for now it would be better if she didn’t know, so she could sleep more and feel better when she woke up. All he had to do now was to somehow drain out the noises running through his mind of Edward’s inner sex monologue. It wouldn’t be long until Carlisle got to him so how hard could it be?

Five minutes later the black BMW cruised down the specially built woodland road path down to the cottage, Jacob hopping into it as quickly as he could when it stopped, finally able to fully block out the sounds. However it was more like jumping from the frying pan into the fire as he had a brief interlude before the foul vampire stench filled his nose once again.

“Urgh, thanks Doc…Carlisle.” It was still quite a habit for Jacob to call Carlisle ‘Doc’ despite having had to leave his dream job some years ago, well to a human anyway.

“You’re welcome Jacob. I take it it’s not stopped yet?”

    “You’re not kidding it hasn’t”

Carlisle chuckled as he pulled away. The gravel under the tyres crunching under the weight of the slightly heavier car now Jacob and all his muscle had added to the scale.

“Emmett was hunting with Rosalie and Esme; they’ve gone back he’s waiting for us on the main road.”

Jacob rolled down a window and nodded as he stuck his head out a little, allowing the breeze to give his hair a new appearance as to at the same time, get some fresher air than what he could breathe in from inside the car.

“So, how’s Ness?” he said as he kept his face in the gentle breeze.

“I spoke to Emily this morning, she’s doing well. After your call last night it seems she was able to sleep with a calmer mind. She’s much more relaxed, at least that’s what Emily told me after she’d checked on her this morning.”

A warm smile crept onto Jacob’s face as he was a little embarrassed talking about his conversation with Renesmee in front of Carlisle, despite him practically being family, a stand-in grandfather-like figure he should have had if Billy’s father were around to govern him.

    “Good.”

Carlisle could see by just talking about Renesmee, how happy it made Jacob. No matter how far away the other was, so long as they had memory of one another they would truly not feel that far apart. Both their thoughts were interrupted when soon on the main road Emmett was waving his arms around his ape-like body, signalling them down like the monkey man he was often called. Rolling his eyes and bracing his nose, Jacob opened the door before they reached him so they didn’t have to stop to let him in.

    “Sup’ guys, how we doin’?

“Hello Emmett, we’re fine thank you.” Carlisle answered politely.

“Yeah easy for you to say.” Jacob grumbled, sticking his head even more out of the window as Carlisle sped off down the road, passing the Forks sign wishing them a safe journey and a swift return.

Jacob too wished for a swift return so he could speak to Renesmee one more. That’s when he remembered.

“Crud!” he exclaimed as he fumbled for his cell phone.

“Is everything alright Jacob?” Carlisle said without taking his eyes of the road.

“I said I’d ring Ness in the morning.”

“Somebody’s in trouble.” Said a grinning Emmett as he leaned back, putting his arms behind his head amused at Jacob’s forgetfulness, brought forward by his eagerness to escape the racket of the cottage.

“Ass” Jacob muttered as he got his cell phone out, calling Renesmee’s number from the list of his last calls, hopefully she would be still asleep so she wouldn’t know he almost forgot to keep his promise of calling her.
