Liam's POV
What the hell! This is crazy. My mate is not only an Alpha but also a black wolf. An extinct wolf. Who would've thought? My mind feels like putty after hearing her tell me this. I have to admit, it's amazing, but it also makes me feel awful because I know something she doesn't and it would kill her if she ever found out.
"What if she already knows. She's proven herself to be very skilled at reading us. She's smart."
"That's not comforting, Ace." I push him to the back of mind as Kiara tries to pull me out of my trance.
"Hello? Anyone in there? Say something?" Listening closer, I now hear the authority in her voice. "Did I blow your mind?"
I compose myself, "No. Sorry. I was just lost in thought, and surprise that you actually told me. You're like a brick wall," Her eyebrows relax but her eyes shoot me a hidden death glare. "I mean that in the nicest way because you're so hard to talk to."
"Whatever. It's dusk now, it's best if we find some place to lay low."
"We could stay in the woods?" I suggest.
"You wouldn't survive the night. You know nothing about the woods and you would stick out like a sore thumb with that coat of yours."
"Way to be blunt," I mutter under my breath while realizing I should probably contact my pack to let them know I'm ok.
"Anytime." She remarks.
"We could go back to my packhouse. It shouldn't be too far." I say as I finish sending the text to Peter, my Beta.
"What are you doing?"
"Texting my Beta to let him know I'm safe. If you want I could always just have a car come pick us up..."
"I don't want anything to do with those human things. When I travel, it's by foot. And besides, we are over 60 miles from your pack house. Sitting here and waiting for a car would be dangerous. Plus, if you send for one, I'm not getting in it, so that's off the table, but it's also not safe to travel at night by ourselves." I become intrigued by her deep breath, she's contemplating something. "We will have to stay in my old packhouse. Just for the night, and then we'll be gone in the morning."
"You sound like you're trying to convince yourself, rather than me," I say before she shifts. I follow suit.
She stops as we pass a stream and carefully walks in and cleans her coat off. I finally see her true wolf. Her coat is as black as midnight, when the moon is at its peak, and the stars help to illuminate the mountains.
"Your wolf is beautiful." I can't contain my awe. I look into her deep brown eyes and see a hint of kindness.
"Your wolf's very bright." She jokes.
Still lying in the stream, I decided to join her. I maneuver my way in front of her, careful not to ruin this moment as I lie down.
"I don't know what it is, but I feel as if I've known you forever. You just seem so familiar to me," I pause and let my words sink in. As I watch her, I see her head and eyes move down and away from me, as if she's trying to hide how she feels, "So you feel it too then, huh?"
"It's probably just the mate bond like you said." She dodges.
"I never said it was the mate bond."
She doesn't reply but instead looks at the sky.
