As much as you had wished the little imp may have gone her own way, her accompaniment really couldn't be helped. She had become Link's shadow, and heard every conversation, critiqued everything you did and ordered you about from her place on the ground, herding you about. Go find your weapons in the village, go this way not that way, don't go over there, go over here! You started to notice that every time she floated in front of you to talk about what she wanted you to do next, your ears flattened against your head. That unchecked monster inside your chest was starting to rattle its cage and demand for blood, even if it was a little nip at the heels! You shook yourself every time that hidden rage started to creep into your head. You did NOT want to give who or whatever was controlling your head any leeway!
Link had already found a sword and a shield in Ordon without too much trouble, and now it was your turn. Placing his front paw against the outside of the Mayor's house, Link let you scramble up his back and through the open window to look for a bow and quiver. The quiver was easy, which you pushed out the window onto Link's back with your snout. Slinking as silently as a cat, you wound your way down through tables and chairs to a small wooden bow seated upon a sofa. It wasn't your bow, but it would do in a pinch, whenever you became human again. Sneaking forward, your clamped your little jaws over the wood just as a giant figure slammed its way into the room, making you jump about five feet into the air! Swinging a crackling torch at your fluffy orange tail, the Mayor bellowed something about monsters in the village.
Taking a flying leap out the window, you landed dead center in the middle of the Ordon villagers swinging deadly flames at you and Link. In a flash, Link grabbed you by your scruff and barreled through the legs of a shopkeeper, sending him flying as you tore out of the village and into the woodland.
It wasn't until you had reached the trickling spring of Ordon that Link put you down, sticking his tongue out with a sneer, "Ick... I'm gonna be plucking your hair out of my teeth for a week!"
You shook off the bite marks in your scruff, about to give him a snappy retort when an etherial voice, spoke out quite from inside the spring, "Wait... Come to my spring... You have been... transformed by the power of shadow... Come to me..."
You cocked your head at Link and peered in though the gate at the calm waters. The both of you clearly heard a voice... but who was it? Padding your way inside, letting the cold water lap around your paws, you searched for the voice, finding nothing but the steady waterfalls. SHOOM!!! Giant, unearthly rocks slammed into the spring around you, connected by a haze of red magic. You were trapped!
A dark figure, lanky and faceless, just like the one that tore you into the twilight fell in front of you with a thud, rolling to its feet. The fur on the back of your spine stood up as you snarled at it, nipping at its heels when you got the chance. Link growled and lunged straight at its throat, ripping and tearing at it until it gargled one last breath and fell into the pool... leaking black blood. It lay there for a moment, cold and lifeless as pieces of it began to float into a dark hole in the sky until there was nothing left. Not the fence surrounding you... not even a drop of blood.
To say you were frightened and confused was an understatement. There was no possible explanation that you could have thought of for what just happened. And now... trails of pure white light swirled up the rocks to gather before you into a figure... a great spirit in the form of an Ordon ram, with eyes like a faceless heaven. It's gaze melted your soul as it spoke with the same etherial voice as before, "O brave youth... I am one of the four spirits of light that protect the land at behest of the gods. That beast you just slayed was meant to steal the light from me as they have my other brethren.
"Hyrule has been reduced to a netherworld, and it will not stop here, soon it will consume the entire world of light. Only you can return the light to this world... the Chosen Heroes of the goddess herself. Find my brethren, return the light to them and you will regain your original forms... Save us all..."
As quickly as it appeared, it was gone. You had wished that it could have stayed just a little bit longer, just so you could stare into those eyes and let that light consume you. Somehow that fear and emptiness you had been feeling for the past few weeks since Ghirahim had taken your heart was gone when the spirit looked into you. Now in its absence you felt your heart grow heavier with the weight of your responsibility and your fate... More than ever you felt the need to be human again.
It hadn't taken long to find the spirit of Faron and return it's light to the spring, and thankfully, doing so turned you both back into humans, garbed in the clothes of the heroes. Link never looked better in your opinion, and you... well you were just glad to have opposable thumbs again! Faron had told you about a dark power that rested in the forest temple, and even though it was forbidden and locked away by the spirits of the land... it was your only hope of matching the power of the king of darkness. So that was where you were headed, the forest temple to try and find something to beat Ghirahim with! 'Oh he was just going to love this little development!' You thought sarcastically in your mind.
You expected him to come later that night to rant and give you orders about how to sabotage your own plans. What you weren't expecting was the conversation Midna managed to strike up!
"So, Vixie... What's with the pretty diamond round your neck?" Midna suddenly piped up as you were walking through the woodland towards the great forest temple.
Your bow crinkled at the name she called you, "Vixie?"
She shrugged, "It's your new nickname. So what's with the jewelry?" She hovered in front of you, back in her shadow form. Her one glowing eye boring into your head.
"Uh-um... It's just a necklace..." You tried to keep it cool, and not seem like this whole thing was a huge secret that could very well ruin your relationship with your best friend.
"Yeah, but it looks special!" Midna cooed and winked at you, "Someone devilishly handsome give it to you? Eee Hee!"
"You might say that..." Ok, now you were getting suspicious of how much she might know....
Link interrupted your thoughts, holding his hands up as he halted his tracks, "Whoa hold up! Who else is devilishly handsome besides me that you know?"
You shook your head, "No one I assure you. A passing ship that's all..."
He put on a deep thinking face, "A passing ship? Hmm... So there was some sort of interlude then?"
"Link..."
He was obviously jealous, but he did well to keep it hidden in gossip, "Aw, come on, ____. Spill! Let's get down to the juicy details. Was he good?"
"LINK!?" Your eyes went wide.
Midna chuckled at your response, "Oh, yup. He definitely was."
You whirled around to face the shadow creature, "I never said that! I didn't sleep with the guy!"
Link shrugged and sighed, "Ok, ok... you have right you your sex life, but I'd like to know who this joker is so I can challenge him for your hand."
"He's nobody, I promise..." You rolled your eyes, thankful that they didn't pry Ghirahim's existence out of you.
"Aw that's sad. I was looking forward to a good fight." Link continued the walk leisurely...
You pursed your lips and jogged to catch up to him, "And as far as my sex life goes, don't worry I don't have one." You shrugged casually, absolutely loving the playful banter. It had been so long since you flirted with Link, and he was getting very good.
Link's brow rose, "Hmm... You want one?"
"I won't deny I haven't thought about it. Why? You offering?" You decided it was time for the tables to be turned.
A hint of pink rose beneath his cheeks, but he kept it covered slightly, "Well... Now that you mention it..."
"Cause I like my men a little more... experienced." You interrupted him, talking a step forward to twirl a strand of his hair in your fingers before sauntering off to leave him smirking. You loved it when you came out on top of the whole conversation.
Midna grumbled, "Ok, love birds. I hate to cut this moment short, but we've arrived."
