Despite the imp's regular verbal beatings and sass, she actually was helping you out of the maze of musty dungeons. You had to get used to your new body, the way it bent and ran like lightning with silent, soft steps over the stone. Your senses felt constantly bombarded by new sights, sounds and smells. Apprehension filled your pores, making you snarl and jump at every little noise. Usually you were pretty laid back, being used to the life of a hero by now, but your animal instincts took over.
Strange beasts now the size of you jumped out of the nooks and crannies of the damp stone to latch onto your scruff. You soon found out the beastly instinct when one wanted to kill. You go for the throat or soft underbelly; the most vulnerable places. It became your instinct. Crouch down and protect your jugular while looking for an opening in your enemy's movements. The beasts were quite dumb as you soon found out, killing them instantly with a sharp bite and snap of the neck.
Occasionally you ran into the bright flicker of little ghostly flames hovering in the corners of the dungeon. With Midna's help and a good amount of concentration from yourself, you were able to use your senses to reveal their true form. Foggy figures of Hylian soldiers shivering in the dark stood before you, speaking comfort to themselves against the darkness, but try as you might, you could never seem to catch their attention. It was like you were invisible to them. And you never knew why...
After what seemed like ages of wandering the tunnels infested with beasts and swimming through murky water, You managed to squirm your way out onto an open roof. A light rain drizzled down to tickle your snout, and a cold wind threatened to tear you from the shingles. At first you were relieved to see daylight... but it wasn't daylight. There was no sun to be seen. It was light enough to see by, yes, but it was eerie. An orange hue that illuminated the towers and clouds beyond. The eternal twilight...
With a lot of care and effort, Midna helped the two of you race across the castle roofs towards a looming tower. There was one time you nearly fell to your death, before Link's sharp teeth snapped onto your scruff to haul you back up. When you shimmied into the tower, you shook off the water and the near death experience. Following a set of stairs sweeping up to a set of large doors, you poked your snout inside. It was a clean room, perhaps once opulent, but now gazed out on to a world of ruin. In the corner was a woman, cloaked, elegant, and stately.
She turned around at the sound of the door opening, a bit of fear in her actions before she saw your guide, "...Midna?!"
The imp chuckled, "Eee hee! You remember my name? What an honor for me..."
You cocked your head to the side, feeling a vague sense of recognition in the woman. Your eyes went wide as you barked, "Zelda!" You immediately ran to place your paws against her knees. Link came up and rubbed against her legs, trying to get her to recognize you.
Even if she didn't understand you, a familiarity sparked within her at your affection, "Link, is that you? And ____?! Oh, my friends! I didn't even recognize you!" She fell to her knees and embraced you in a tight hug.
Midna rolled her eyes, hovering back a little, "They're not exactly what I had in mind, but... I guess they'll do."
Zelda looked up from petting the two of you, "These are the chosen heroes of the goddess!" She turned to you, stroking your coats, "This is a sign... It is a sign that the powers of the chosen ones rest within you... and that they are awakening." You found her touch to be quite... relaxing. Especially that one spot right behind your left ear. She pulled away and you found yourself disappointed. Zelda took Link's paw in her hand, rubbing her thumb over the chains, "...You were imprisoned? I am sorry."
"Poor things, they have no idea what's happened..." Midna cooed.
Zelda knelt down and spoke to you softly, "Listen carefully... Hyrule has been transformed by the king that rules the twilight... Zant. Our world has been turned into a world of shadows, ruled by creatures who shun the light..."
'That certainly sounds like Ghirahim...' You thought when hearing the story of the attack on the castle.
"Twilight covered Hyrule like a shroud, and without light, the people became as spirits. Within the twilight, they live on, unaware that they have passed into spirit forms... All the people know now is fear... Fear of a nameless evil... The kingdom succumbed to twilight, but I remain its princess..." she shook her head, a sadness washing over her.
Mind cocked her head to the side, "You don't have to look so sad! We actually find it to be quite livable! I mean, is perpetual twilight really all that bad?" she shrugged.
Zelda's brow furrowed, and gave the imp one of those looks you'd rather not be at the receiving end of, "Midna... This is no time for levity. The shadow beasts have been searching far and wide for you. Why?"
Mind bounced and hovered in the air, her back turned to you as she chuckled, "Why indeed? You tell me! Eee hee hee!"
Zelda sighed, looking to the two of you with loneliness in her eyes, "Time has grown short. The guard will soon make his rounds. You must leave here, quickly."
Link padded up to her and nuzzled her hand, trying to reassure her before he gave a slight whimper and strode off towards the door. Midna jumped on to his back again, and he shook his head.
Even though you knew she couldn't understand you, you barked, "Don't worry. We'll do everything we can."
Zelda smiled brightly at the cute little noises you made and scratched the underside of your chin before you padded off after Link, your bushy tail trailing behind. Skipping down the stairs at a smooth sprint, you almost ran nose first into Link's rear as he skidded to a halt. Wriggling your nose, you cocked your head to hear the door swing open at the bottom of the steps. Shoot!
Mind whispered harshly in your ears, "Not that way! The guard's coming! Boy, he's prompt!" she sat up and jumped onto a window ledge a few feet above you. You scrambled onto Link's back as he made a jump for it and shifted himself through the window and back out into the chilling rain. Your coat rippled in tiny shivers as you jumped from his back onto your feet.
Mind floated in front of you, a large grin across her face, "Eee hee hee! Well, well... You're the chosen heroes and all that, huh? I guess a promise is a promise, so I'll let you go back to where you first tumbled into twilight..."
Your memory was suddenly sparked at the mention of the twilight! There was a reason you had stumbled in in the first place! "Link we can't go back yet! Malo, Beth, Colin. We have to save them!" You didn't particularly add Illia in that list of urgency. Though you knew you probably should have.
Mind cocked her head to the side, "Little Midna would be happy to help you! But... Well, you'd have to be my servant... and like a servant, you'd have to do exactly as I say!"
"Oh no. I don't do servitude." you shook your head, scoffing at what the imp was asking for. You already weren't incredibly fond of her, and the idea of being under more than one master right now was asking too much.
Link bowed his head over yours, "____, this might be our only shot at rescuing them. She clearly knows more about the twilight than we do."
"You're boyfriend's got a good head on his shoulders. So whaddya say?" she asked, a hint of mischief in her gaze.
You rolled your eyes, "Fine." It's not like you were gonna promise to do exactly everything she wanted.
Before you knew what was going on, you could feel your body disapperating into millions of tiny pieces. You floated in a strange tunnel of shadow for a few moments, and came out standing in the cool, dry summer night in the spring beside Ordon village. The feeling left a bone chilling tingle in your core, and you hated it, trotting about to try and regain some kind of normal feeling.
Just as you took a few steps out of the spring, Midna's voice echoed around you, "Oh, that's right. I forgot to mention one thing... Though you may have left the darkened realm, you haven't transformed back to your former selves... and you won't anytime soon! Now why could that be? Eee hee hee! See you later!"
