I got a text from Mia the next day.
Mia: I did something.
Me: What did you do?
Mia: I can't tell you over text
Me: ok
Mia: Or in class. Too embarrassing
Me: k
Mia: Meet me at Starbucks in ten minutes
Me: I'm already there
Mia: See you in ten
Ten minutes later she was there.
"What's up?" I asked as she sat down.
"I did something."
"Okay. Before you say anymore, do you want coffee? I need a refill."
"Yeah. Caramel latte." I stood to go get our drinks at the counter. Thankfully, Alex wasn't there. I sat back down while we waited.
"So what did you do?" I asked.
"It's so embarrassing." She blushed.
"You can tell me."
"I know. I trust you."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Okay, continue."
"Right. Anyways, I got drunk last night..." she started.
"That sentence starter never ends well." we giggled.
"I was at a great party. There were strobe lights, and a fog machine, and a disco ball..." she continued to list off the decorations.
"And you did what while you were drunk?" I asked.
"Oh. Right. Well, I sorta go nuts when I'm drunk, and I know it. I had too much to drink, I had promised myself I wouldn't get drunk."
"Obviously didn't work."
"No."
"Where was this?"
"At some East-Side night club."
"You don't even remember where?"
"Nope. Not the point though."
"Okay, back to what you did, I guess."
"Right. Well, I took something." her face flushed bright red.
"What?!"
"Yeah. I took the disco ball and ran away screaming 'You'll never get me! You don't have the power of the rainbow ball!' and then I hopped into my car, which I'm surprised I wasn't caught for drinking and driving. So now I have a disco ball at my dorm and I don't know what to do." I burst into a fit of laughter.
"Madalyn!"
"I-I'm sorry, t-too fu-nny!" I laughed harder. Mia didn't look pleased. "I'll s-stop." I tried to hold it together. My face must've been bright red.
"Madalyn, you're face is like a tomato. I give up. Laugh." I burst out laughing, earning stares from the other people in the room. I didn't care.
"I know what you can do!" I laughed even more.
"What?"
"Throw a party,"
"With a stolen disco ball! No!"
"No one else has to know it's stolen."
"No." she sighed. "I won't do that."
"Okay, then there's always something called regifting."
"I'M NOT GOING TO REGIFT A FREAKING DISCO BALL!" she whisper yelled.
"Okay, okay. Well then, option number three."
"Which is...?"
"Tell me happy late birthday and give it to me. I'll fix it. I will return it to them." I was totally kidding.
"Really? You'd do that for me?" I guess she didn't pick up on that. Oh well.
"Yeah why not? Isn't that what college friends are for? Fixing their friends' dumb mistakes?" She laughed. I laughed too.
"I guess. I can't thank you enough, though. Thank you Madalyn." We walked to her car, and moved the disco ball to mine. She left, and as soon as she turned the corner, I hopped in my car and headed the opposite way. I got to the East side of town, and stepped out of the car. I got a few whistles. I grabbed the disco ball, and flung it at one of the guys who whistled. It hit him square in the stomach. I felt bad. But not really.
"You can keep it!" I shouted. I got back in the car and drove away, taking a few detours in half circles so no one followed my direct path. I went back home, and Thomas was there.
"Hi." I said. I walked into the kitchen and pulled open the cabinet. "I'm making soup." I pulled out the can.
"Cool." He sat down in a chair, pulling out a book.
"You read?" I joked. Thomas loved to play sports, and loves to read too, so I teased him when he read.
"Madds.." he wasn't happy.
"It was a joke."
"I know. It's an old joke that you need to put to sleep, where it will wake up on a farm." he chuckled.
"Mean!" I said, glaring at him. When the soup finished, I poured some into a bowl for myself.
"Soups on!" I called. He had gone into his room. I sat at the couch, facing the TV.
"Where's my bowl?"
"Thomas, you aren't a kid anymore! Get it yourself." I laughed, blowing on a spoon of chicken noodle soup to cool it. We watched TV and talked. He had apparently gotten up early to go to the gym.
"Who are you trying to impress?" I wiggled my eyebrows the best I could. Epic fail.
"You don't get to know."
"Do I know him?"
"Her."
"Okay. I didn't want to assume." I put my hands next to my head, in a gesture of surrender.
"And no." He stood, placing his bowl in the sink. I didn't care if he rinsed it or not because he did dishes around here. I rinsed mine when I was done, turning off the TV. It was only 3pm. What do I want to do? I decided to curl up with a book. I read for hours, and my stomach grumbled, so I made dinner. I stayed up late reading, and finished my book at midnight. I went to bed, unsatisfied with the cliffhanger. I needed to go get the next book.
