"Madds, I'm sad to see you go. I'm glad you're awake and alive and, well, frankly, I'm glad you're here." said Thomas. He was blushing. Blushing! Does that mean he likes me?? Am I just jumping to conclusions? i need to calm down. I'm overthinking everything.
"Yeah, I'm glad I got to come. My mom is going to freak on me when I'm home. I can feel it. it's because i drove here without permission."
"Seriously?! The Madalyn I know would never do that!"
"Well the Madalyn you knew also wasn't in a car crash and also didn't dream in her coma that-" I stopped. I hadn't told him anything about the dream. Not even that I dreamt.
"You can dream in a coma?? What was the dream about? Tell me!"
"You sound like an excited little girl. Stop."
"Sorry, but I want to know. What happened? Was it a crazy dream? Was it like real life?"
"Woah. Okay. It was almost exactly like real life, but minus the car accident. Like it never happened. I hallucinated what I thought that year would have been. I met people, but they aren't real. At least I don't think... And we-" I stopped. I won't tell him that part.
"We... we what?" he asked. He looked puzzled, like he was trying to figure it out. "Tell me. You can trust me, you know that."
"Yeah, I do. But this is... well... personal."
"Madalyn, please. It involved me, so it's personal to me, too."
"That doesn't work, not in this scenario."
"Ooh! Scenario! What were we? Strippers?" I blushed at the thought. What would our names be? Glitter Legs and... and what?
"Huh? No!"
"We were strippers. You took a second to respond."
"Now you're acting like a high schooler."
"Look. If we weren't strippers what were we?" I grabbed my bag, ready to head out the door. I opened it.
"Togther." I said, and walked out. I half ran to my car.
"Madalyn! Wait!" Thomas called behind me. I turned my head.
"What? Now you're going to make fun of me, right?"
"No! I mean no. I- look. the day of the crash... I was going to ask you out."
"Really? In my... alternate reality I asked you out. That same day."
"Are you making that up?"
"No. I can't believe you like me back. Sounds like something out of a book."
"You'd know about that, what with you reading so many books..." I laughed. "What?"
"In the reality we were moving into the same apartment and you carried my vanity... my vanity full of books."
"Dude. How high up?"
"Three flights."
"Madalyn!"
"What?? I didn't want to carry it!"
We spoke and laughed and talked for a little while longer before I had to get home. I had bought cheap snacks from an in town gas station, which included gum, drinks, chips, candy, the necessities for a road trip.
"Bye."
"You can't just leave."
"I wish I didn't have to. I promised my mom three days."
"Why not longer?"
"Because that's all I could get from her. She wanted me home that night. We negotiated to three days."
"Oh."
I gave him a kiss on the cheek. He caught my head before it turned too far and kissed me directly on the lips. It felt just like it had in my little reality. The reality that in some way has come true. It wasn't super long, but it was long enough. I put all of my anger into the kiss, turning it to passion. I poured my heart out in the short kiss.
"Wow. you're a good kisser."
"I have to go. I'll call. And text. And FaceTime."
"Okay." Before I drove off campus I talked to admittance. They gave me an application and said if I turned it in within two weeks they'll see what they could do, considering application due dates were a month ago. i had explained my situation. I would hopefully be attending this school with Thomas next year. The thought made me happy. I got in the car and started the long drive home.
