Chapter 2

Kale didn’t get much sleep with Sugar whining throughout the night and getting up taking her out to the back yard to do her business, but he enjoyed her company. But for now he needed coffee. Kale started the coffee pot and gave Sugar her breakfast and a fresh bowl of water. He heard Chase’s car pull up into the driveway and rubbed Sugars’ head. “Here’s your chance to get him” Kale said to Sugar. Chase walked in and Sugar barked and ran and hid behind Kale’s legs. “Look at that, someone became a daddy.” Chase was already down to the floor and calling Sugar over to him. “Chase this is Sugar, Sugar this is Uncle Chase.” As to let him know that the comment irritated him. Sugar finally made her way over to Chase and lavished him with her kisses as Kale told him the story of how he got her. “She’s a beauty, Kale” Chase said rising from the floor. “Has Uncle Blake been by yet?” letting Kale know he meant it to bother him. “No. Not yet." He was going to help his parents or something wasn’t he?” Chase said “Yeah, something like that. Well, I got to go; I’m on duty in a few hours and got some errands to run. What are you doing later tonight?” “Not sure, this morning I’m helping dad with the garage door and then I’m thinking about running over to the mansion and get some more work done on it. I haven’t really decided what I’m doing later since now I’m a Daddy” Kale said with a grin. “Boy, we lead boring lives.” Chase said back with a laugh. “What did you stop by for if you have to go?” Kale asked. “Just to see what you’re doing later. I was already over here on a call from last night; I had to pick up their statements.” “Oh, well I’ll let you know then about later” Kale replied. Chase left as Kale took Sugar out to do here business then went about his morning routine. When he was done Kale put Sugar in her kennel with some toys and started to leave when his phone rang “Hello” he said answering it. “Hi Dad, I was just stepping out the door now” “Okay, I can do that, we’ll talk tomorrow then” Kale hung up and went off to the mansion.

Kale pulled up the driveway to the mansion, shut the truck off and stared at the window. ‘Why is this window so intriguing to me?’ Kale thought. It’s just a normal window, but that wasn’t it. It had to be something in that room. He hadn’t been in the room yet, but a few times when Blake and Chase were there he wanted to go up and check it out, but didn’t. He thought that is what he was going to do now. Why did that room or the house for that matter, make him feel connected to it? Kale got out of his truck and walked up to the door; unlocked it and went inside. “Everything seems normal” Kale told himself. “Lets’ go up to that room.” “Why the hell am I talking to myself and why the hell am I answering myself? Get a grip Kale”. He shrugged his shoulders and shook his head as to shake it off. Kale walked up the stairs all the while admiring the wood and the intricate textures of the walls. The mansion was a very beautiful house. He stood outside the bedroom door and slowly reached for the door knob. He thought to himself; ‘what are you waiting for? Do you think a ghost is going to jump out and say Boo?’ He shook his head again and laughed to himself and thought ‘you baby’. He opened the door and found nothing unusual. He looked around the room and thought this had to be a beautiful room when it was built and furnished. He wanted to get started on this room first. Kale went back out to his truck and grabbed some of his tools and equipment. Heaved them up the stairs and placed them all on the floor in the middle of the room. Some of the furniture was still left in the house and he thought he would rebuild them or repair them. Antiques, he thought. ‘Now; where to start?’ Kale thought looking around. ‘Well, from the ceiling down to the floor’. Kale began doing his work.

Checking this, checking that. Pulling this off and that off. Then Kale noticed something in the ceiling after he tore the ceiling paper off. It was like a trap door but in the ceiling in the corner. It was just a small square hole that would allow someone to get in enough to hide something up there. Kale slowly pulled on the trap door and noticed a wooden trunk up in a small space. This had to have been built in special because it was just a nook in the ceiling and if he hadn’t scrapped at the ceiling no one would have found it. He pulled out the trunk as he steadied himself on the ladder and then sat it on the floor when he climbed down. “Man, this thing is heavy” Kale said out loud and didn’t care he was talking to himself now. Trying to get the latch open he swore as he cut his finger. Kale grabbed a long screw driver to wedge it in between the latch and the trunk and twisted the screw driver to pop open the latch. “There you go” Kale said when the latch popped. Kale opened the trunk and it was filled with money and books, books that looked like accounting books and a letter on top. He opened the letter and read it.
