Chapter 3

Kale had unlocked the door to Mr. O’Shays’ mansion. Chase had brought a bag of investigative equipment. “Any clues in here, we’ll find it with this stuff.” Chase said while holding up the bag to show Kale. “Well do your thing Bro’.” Chase sat the bag down in the living room of the mansion, unzipped it and laid the contents of it onto the floor. Kale had walked around looking at the rooms in a new light. Looking into the rooms and imagining how it looked when it was totally furnished with people relaxing and enjoying each other. Chase had already started on the investigation and marking things as he went from room to room. Kale was still daydreaming when the door opened. “Hello?” A voice came from the foyer and then again in the living room. “I said hello.” Sarah said to Kale. Kale jumped a bit and turned around. “Oh. I was just trying to imagine the room furnished. Hi, I’m Kale McJonas and you are?” “Hi, I’m Sarah O’Shay.” Chase came into the room and stopped when he noticed Kale and a woman staring at each other. “I was going to tell you all the findings, but, I think you’re busy.” Chase said to Kale. “Chase! Chase this is Miss O’Shay. Miss O’Shay, this is one of my best friends Chase Anderson.” Kale said after he cleared his throat. Sarah reached her

hand out and shook hands with Chase. “You can call me Sarah. Miss O’Shay makes me feel too formal.” Chase and Kale smiled at her and agreed. “Miss, Sarah, I have to tell

you something before we go any further and I didn’t want to discuss this over the phone.

Maybe we should sit down first.” They all went into the kitchen and sat down at the breakfast nook on some stools that were left. Kale began talking again, “I am renovating this house. The city bought this house and hired me to renovate it. I am looking into refinishing some of the furniture left here. The reason I called you was to ask you if you know where your grandfather is. I have.” Sarah stopped Kale and started to freak. “What do you mean where my grandfather is? How did the city buy this house? My grandfather never signed anything.” “Do you know where he is?” Chase asked. “I talked to him a few weeks ago.” Sarah blurted out angrily. “Exactly when was the last time you talked to him?” Kale asked. “A few weeks ago, I said.” Chase came around the kitchen counter and stood by Sarah, “I know this must be difficult for you but, we really need to know the exact day or time of day you last talked to him.” Sarah paused a minute thinking. “It was a Tuesday because he had a function to do Wednesday and he asked if he could call me back because he was preparing for it and I said yes, of course.” “Did he call you back?” Kale asked. “No.” Sarah replied “No, he didn’t, and I went about my days and didn’t think about it.” Sarah said as she started to cry. “Don’t cry honey, we’ll find him.” Kale said to Sarah softly as he hugged her. Chase found some tissues in his bag and handed them to Sarah. “Thank you. I should have called him back. He’s old and I’m all he has left. I should have been here with him.” Sarah continued saying as she cried. “So you are

his son’s child!” Kale sprung up. “I was researching for a child.” Kale added. Sarah started laughing. “I’m ok now. This is all too much to take in at once.” “I know, but the

sooner we can put all this together, the sooner we can find your grandfather”. Kale and Chase continued to fill in Sarah with their research when Blake came running into the house. “Hey, where are you guys?” Blake yelled out from the foyer. “We’re in the kitchen.” Chase said as Kale gave Sarah more tissues. Blake came into the kitchen and was startled by Sarah. “Hi.” Blake said. “Sarah, this is my other best friend, Blake.” Kale said to Sarah. “Hi” Sarah said to Blake. “Blake is helping us.” Kale said to Sarah. “What are you doing here?” Chase asked Blake. “I’m on a late lunch break and I needed to show you guys what I found out so far.” Blake said shaking some papers in his hand. Sarah stood up and asked Blake to share his information and lay the papers down on the counter for them all to see. When they had all gone over Blake’s information Kale remembered about Chase and his investigation. “So, what did you find?” Kale said to Chase. Chase began “Well, I found some little things here and there upstairs but the amazing one was in the Library. Let me show you.” Chase took them all through the house showing them what he had found. Chase didn’t show them the library yet. He had some questions for Sarah first. “Can we sit down for some questions before I show you what I found in here, in this library?” Chase suggested. “Is there a problem?” Sarah asked Chase. “Not with you, but I would like some answers to figure out what I found in here.” “Ok.” Sarah agreed with a little hesitation and curiosity. There were still some wing backed chairs left in the library so they had a seat. “Ok? Now, what can I answer for you?” Sarah said with a little bit of sarcasm but there was more worry then anything. Chase began asking small questions first. How was her relationship with her grandfather, etc? Then he went on to
