Chapter 10

In the morning Kale let Sarah sleep as he went down to make some coffee. Chase was already gone and Mel was still up in her room sleeping. Kale let Sugar out and grabbed the morning paper. Kale sat down shuffled through the paper until he found the sports section. The coffee pot beeped, Kale got a mug and poured himself some. He sat at the kitchen table and read the paper drinking his coffee. Kale let Sugar back in and fed her some breakfast. Frankie came in and started meowing and rubbing Kale’s ankle. Kale picked up Frankie and asked what he wanted. Kale got Frankie his breakfast and went back to his coffee and paper.

Sarah came downstairs and went into the kitchen. “Good morning” Sarah said to Kale. “Good morning to you to sunshine” Kale said back to her. “Can you do me a favor?” Sarah asked. “Sure. What?” Kale asked. “Can you go get doughnuts for breakfast?” Sarah asked. “Yes, I can go get doughnuts for breakfast” Kale said back as he got up and hugged Sarah and gave her a kiss. Mel came in and said “Oh, doughnuts. That’s perfect.” “Are there any particular kind you want?” Kale asked “Can you get me the ones that have custard in the middle and chocolate on top? I’ll love you even more” Sarah said to Kale all lovey dovie. “Sure. Anything for you darling” Kale said back with a little chuckle. “Mel; is there any specific kind you like?” “Any is good for me. Get anything you want. I’ll eat it.” Mel said. Kale grabbed his keys and headed for the door. Chase came in and asked where he was going. “I have been instructed to go get doughnuts. Wanna come?” “Sure. I’ll go. I’ll be right out” Chase said to Kale. “Ok” Kale replied ack. “Hey” Kale yelled to Chase “Can you tell Sarah that I have already fed the pets?” “Yeah” “Thanks”. Kale walked to his truck and dropped the keys. He bent down to pick them up. Mel noticed Kale bending down and asked what he was picking up when Chase turned and noticed the little black box blinking red under Kales’ truck. Kale was putting the key in the ignition and started to turn the key when Chase came out yelling “Kale! Stop! There’s a bomb. Get out and run!” The girls ran out after Chase finding Kale looking at Chase with a look of confusion. Chase continued to run toward the truck for Kale to hear. As Chase got closer he stopped to hold the girls back but was still yelling. Kale understood him now and got out. As Kale started running the truck blew up, the force pushed Kale forward and knocking him unconscious. Sarah screamed and Mel grabbed her. Chase started running again and yelled to Mel to call for an ambulance. Mel ran fast inside and grabbed the phone. Dialing as she shook. “I need an ambulance. There was a bomb and it exploded. We need medical help. Hurry please.” “What is your address? “ The dispatcher asked. “You know my address, you have caller I.D. so just get someone over here quick. He’s bleeding and unconscious.” “What is a phone number that we can reach you back on if we get disconnected?” “Listen lady. You have all that information. Quit fucking around and get that damn ambulance here now” Mel said getting upset. “I’m not hanging up until the ambulance gets here.” Mel said. “The ambulance is on its way. You should be hearing the sirens soon.” The dispatcher said. Mel looked around and saw nothing “I’m not hearing them” she said but then she heard the sirens coming. “I hear the sirens” Mel told the dispatcher. “They’re getting closer” “I see them. Thank you.” Mel said to the dispatcher and hung up. Mel ran back out to comfort Sarah who had run down the driveway and was on the ground rubbing Kale’s head and laying next to him. Sarah was crying hysterically and talking to Kale. “Kale honey, you’ll be ok. The ambulance is here and they are going to take good care of you. Hold on baby. I Love You Kale” Sarah said crying and kissing Kale’s cheek over and over.  Chase put his hands on Sarah’s shoulders and was trying to get her to get up so the paramedics could get in and check Kale. Sarah wasn’t moving. “Get away Chase. I’m not leaving his side.” The paramedics came closer and put their boxes of supplies down by Kale’s side. The fire department was behind the ambulance and the police were behind the fire department. Chase went over to the police car and leaned against the hood as the officer stepped out. “What’s going on Chase?” The police officer asked softly. “He was going to go get doughnuts.” Chase said. “I was going to go with him but he came out to start the truck and I was on my way out when I saw the red lights under the truck and I knew it was a bomb. I yelled for him to get out and run but he didn’t hear me and then when he did it was too late. The bomb went off and he went flying. He hasn’t woke up or moved and his breathing is really shallow. He’s bleeding.” Chase said shaken up.
