Chapter 4
Kale woke up to the smell of actual food. Good smelling food. Kale rolled over to pet Sugar and tell her there is food but she wasn’t there. Kale sat up and wondered if Sugar had jumped down and slept on the floor. She wasn’t any where in his room. Kale got up and went into his bathroom thinking she slept in the bathroom. She wasn’t in there either. Kale decided to go down and see what was going on but first thought maybe he should change from his sweat pants or at least put a shirt on but Kale said the heck with it the smell of breakfast won. Kale went down the stairs and hearing voices he followed them to the kitchen. “Well look who’s up. Good morning Kale.” Sarah said. “I thought I would let you sleep. I hope you don’t mind that I made breakfast? I also took Sugar out for her morning stroll and gave her breakfast.” Sarah added. “Thank you, for all of it.” Kale could only stare as the words came out. Sarah handed him a cup of coffee and announced breakfast is almost done. Kale thought he could definitely get used to this as he fixed up his coffee with cream and sugar. Chase stood up and smirked at Kale, “Close your mouth buddy, your drooling.” Kale looked over to Sarah and closed his mouth. Sarah only smiled and winked at Kale then she looked at Nat and they both giggled to themselves. Sarah turned around and told everyone breakfast was ready. Kale asked if he could help serve and Sarah agreed as she handed him the plates. Sarah whispered to Kale as he stood there while she put the food on the plates, “I hope you don’t mind that I let Sugar out of your room?” “No. No that’s fine. I was curious when I woke up to that wonderful smell, where she was.” “I was also going to ask you if it was alright to make breakfast but you looked so peaceful sleeping I didn’t want to wake you.” “That was thoughtful. I haven’t been able to sleep for the past few days. I guess it caught up to me” Kale replied. Kale turned to serve Chase and Natalie, then turned back around to pick up the plates for Sarah and himself when Blake came in. “My God, something smells so wonderful I nearly thought I had the wrong house at first.” Blake trailed off when he saw Sarah and Natalie. “Hi.” Blake said. “Blake, this is one of Sarah’s best friends, Natalie Kingston.” Kale said and then turned to Nat and said “Natalie this is my other best friend Blake McGregor.” “Would you like some breakfast?” Sarah asked Blake. “Yes, please.” Blake responded patting his stomach. Natalie slid over and told Blake he could have a seat. Blake sat down and asked Chase how he was doing. “Not bad, but remind me later to have Kale buy a new couch.” “What’s wrong with my couch?” Kale defended when he gave Blake his plate. “It’s not as comfy as mine.” Natalie added her two cents along with Chases. “Mine is actually more comfortable also. Sorry.” “I have had that couch for.” Blake jumped in now. “Like forever.” “I like that couch.” Kale said and went back over to Sarah and held out the last two plates for Sarah to fill. “When did you get the couch?” Sarah asked. “He got it our first year together.” Chase said. “Your guys’ first year in college?” Natalie asked. “No. Our first year of being friends.” Blake said. “Which was when we were born.” Chase chimed in. “My mother bought that couch when I was born and I have always liked it. When I was sick, I would lay on it and mom would bring me soup. I made out with my first girlfriend on that couch.” Kale said when Chase and Blake just stared at him. “Eeww, and I slept on that?” Chase stated. Everyone laughed as Chase pretended to brush himself off. “It’s sentimental.” Kale said talking baby talk. Sarah and Kale sat down with their plates and began eating. Chase groveled over the breakfast and Blake commented on the breakfast as well. Kale took his first bite and told Sarah she was hired. Sarah laughed, but Chase and Blake fought over who was going to hire her first.
Sarah’s cell phone rang. She got up and hurried to her purse as she said “it’s gotta be Mel.” Natalie perked up and followed Sarah with her eyes. Sarah answered “Hello.” “Hey it’s Mel.” Sarah said to everyone as Melanie continued yelling “Where the hell is this house? I have been driving all over the place and can’t find it.” Sarah could only laugh at Melanie. It was just like her. She hated going places that she didn’t know without the exact directions. Sarah asked her “exactly where are you?” “In my fucking car.” Melanie responded. Sarah laughed again and said “Hang on; I’ll get Kale to help you.” “Who the fu” Melanie started to ask when Kale got on the phone. “Hi, what street are you on?” “Nemmet and God knows what.” Mel said a little snotty. Kale wanted to laugh but he kept his cool. “Ok, you’ll have to turn around and when you get onto Fletcher, turn right. Go down two blocks at Sinclair turn right again. The very next street on your left is Heaten Ave. I’m the first house on the left.” Kale said. “I was just there like fifty times. I didn’t see your house.” Melanie blurted out in frustration. “Ok, do you see the gas station on the corner?” “Yes.” “Go there and we will be there in a minute. Then you can follow us back.” “Fine.” Melanie said sarcastically. Kale hung up and Sarah was already getting their jackets. She handed Kale’s to him and he just looked at her. “It’s supposed to be chilly this morning, you’ll need a jacket.” Kale took the jacket “Thank you mother.” “You’re welcome.” Kale looked back at everyone else and said they would be right back. Melanie was the same height as Sarah but just a little heavier. Melanie’s hair is wildly curly brown with a touch of red highlights that fell to rest on her shoulders and big blue eyes. Her nose is well structured with a bit of a bump on the bridge, high cheek bones and average lips. Melanie is more the tomb boy type that also has a tomb boy physique and doesn’t have a problem speaking her mind. But then again she grew up with four older brothers. Melanie’s parents went through hell trying to teach her to act like a lady.
