 Chapter 5

After driving for hours, Kale had no other place to look. He felt like he had failed her. Kale looked at his cell phone and noticed that it was off. “Shit, no wonder I haven’t heard anything from Chase on Sarah.” Kale turned his phone on and had a bunch of calls from Chase, Blake, Natalie and Melanie. Kale heard the first voice mail from Chase, “Kale, they are preparing to take Sarah into surgery. She was stabbed. Where are you? Don’t do anything that I’m going to have to arrest you for.” The next voice mail was from Blake. “Hey, Mel and I just heard. We are on our way to the hospital.” Melanie added to Blake’s message “If you find him leave some of him for me to rip apart.” All the other voice mails were just “Where are you?” Kale turned the corner and headed to the hospital. Kale was furious with himself; but worried for Sarah.

Kale arrived at the hospital, parked and was walking to the main entrance. “Kale” Melanie said from the side of the building puffing on a cigarette. “She’s still in surgery,” taking another puff. “Got another one of those?” Kale asked. As Melanie gave Kale a cigarette she explained she was trying to quit and hadn’t had one in two weeks but she needed one now.  Kale also explained he was also trying to quit and hadn’t had one in three weeks but needed one now as well. Kale walked a few steps away looking at the side of the hospital “I don’t even know you guys, girls, he corrected, but yet I feel a connection to you all. I lo… Kale stopped then continued “I couldn’t find him. I couldn’t find that bastard.” Kale said. Melanie came up beside Kale and put her arm around his

waist. “We all feel the same Kale, Sarah, feels the same.” They put their cigarette butts out and went to were the others were. When they walked in, Natalie got right up and hugged Kale. “How is she? Have they been out to say anything yet?” Kale asked. “No, they haven’t been out and nothing said” She stopped because she heard the doctor ask for the family of Sarah O’Shay. Kale went right up to the doctor and asked how she was. The doctor gestured to the chairs to have a seat. Kale was fidgeting with his hands so he thought the best place for them was in his pockets until he sat down and then laced his fingers together on his lap. The doctor went on saying that she was going to be ok; the stab wound just barely missed her right lung and surrounding organs and will need to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation. “Ok, that’s fine but I want security on her at all times.” Kale demanded. Chase came over to the doctor and explained she is a vital person in a murder case and someone found her and tried to kill her. The doctor agreed to the security. Kale also demanded a private room for her. “I want the best possible care for her doc.” Kale said scared. “She will get the best.” The doctor assured him. “I don’t care how much this is going to cost, I’ll pay for everything.” Kale said. “She has insurance” Melanie spouted. Then realized she said it too harsh and apologized when Kale turned to her. “I want the best for her.” Kale said and turned to the doctor. “Can I see her?” Kale asked. “Soon” the doctor replied. “Someone will let you know.” The doctor added and put his hand on Kale’s shoulder and gave it a squeeze. Kale took a deep breath and started to pace. Natalie suggested to Melanie that they go to the gift shop and get something for Sarah. Kale had to leave; he couldn’t stay here and wait. Kale looked at Chase and Blake and said he would be right back and to call him immediately when she can have visitors. “Where are you going? I’m coming with you, actually I’ll drive you.” Blake said. “I want to go get Sarah some flowers.” Kale said calmly now and sat down with tears in his eyes. “I couldn’t find the bastard that did this to her. I couldn’t find him. I wanted to find him and kill him for hurting her. I failed her.” “Kale, we’ll get him.” Blake said as he put a hand on Kales shoulder. Chase sat down on the chair on the other side of Kale. “We’ll get them all. Sarah is going to be ok. You didn’t fail her” Chase explained. Kale stood up and put his hands in his pockets with his back to his friends “You guys, I love her.” Kale turned to them now and repeated “I love her” Chase and Blake stood up and hugged Kale, a big group hug. “We know” they said. The girls came back with stuffed animals and flowers. “Awww, look at that, the boys do get along.” Melanie said. They broke up their huddle and Kale wiped his eyes. “I think it’s wonderful.” Natalie said. “What’s wonderful?” Blake asked. “That Kale finally said it.” Natalie walked over to Kale and said “Sarah loves you too. I can tell by the way she looks at you. You two are good for each other.” She glanced at Blake and then back to Kale. “Now, all you have to do is tell her.” “I haven’t known her that long to be in love with her, but I am” Kale said to them all and Blake jumped in and asked Kale if he still wanted to go get Sarah flowers. “Yeah, let’s go.” Kale said. “I’m driving.” Blake said. Chase yelled for them to get a bouquet for him while they were there. Blake raised his hand as him and Kale were walking in acknowledgement that he heard Chase. Kale suggested the floral shop down the street. Blake knew the flowers at the gift shop were not what Kale had in mind. Blake gave the thumbs up as he pulled his keys out of his pocket. “We could also go to the floral shop on route sixteen.” Blake suggested. “No, I don’t want to go too far away from Sarah; the one down the street is fine.” Kale said back as he gave a look back to the hospital. Blake understood and said “You got it buddy.”
