 Chapter 20: Stare

Kathryn Bernardo’s POV

Na alimpungatan ako sa ingay. “hmmm”

Biglang may tumapik sa balikat ko. “Kath? Are you awake?” i smiled. DJ.

I opened my eye lids. The sudden light blinded me. I blinked several times just to adjust my vision.

I realized that i was laying on the couch. Still on the hospital room of my bestfriend.

My eyes roamed the room. Bakit andaming tao? Bakit ang saya saya nila? Bakit lahat naka ngiti? At dun ko nakita ang nakangiti ring si Julia. Ang best friend ko. Wait-what?

“J-julia?” mas mukhang tinatanong ko ang sarili ko.

Her smile grew wider.

“Kath” she said. Napanganga na lang ako. At di napigilang maluha, “t-totoo ba to?”and  to make the story short, di ako makapaniwala kaya i pinch my skin. “oww” i groaned in pain.

My attention was adverted when i heard the familiar laugh coming from my Best friend.

I looked up to her.

And she returned my gaze. We’re just staring like there’s no tomorrow. And that’s when i heard a fake-cough.  I looked up to Deejay. “A kath. Julia. Labas na muna kami a” he said at pinagyayaya ang mga kaibigan namin ni Julia na nandito, sa labas.

I looked at allysa and yanna.  I missed them too. They’re my best friends too. They just smiled then walk outside.

Ng kami na lang ang natira, ay napayuko ako.

“Julia?” “Kath” sabay naming sabi.

We just stared each other’s then with wide eyes we started laughing.

I know it’s weird pero parang connected talaga ang mga isip naming kaya kung natatawa ang isa ramdam din ng isa.

When we stopped laughing we ‘again’ stared at each other. Maybe waiting on which should talk first. After a dreading silence...

I stood up then hugged her. “I’m sorry best” I said still hugging her.

She hugged me back “ no best. I’m the one who should be apologizing”

Inalis ko ang pagkayakap ko sa kanya at umupo katabi niya

“ best” i started.

She looked at me. “About what happened, im—“ i cut her off because I know what she’s going to say.

“To be honest with you?  I was insanely mad at you—“she didn’t let me finish “and i deserved that”

I immediately shook my head

“ no. You don’t. No one’s as special as you deserve that” I said. “let me finish okay? Don’t interrupt me” i said while pointing my finger at her warningly. Then she laughs then nodded.

“nung una, oo, nagalit ako. I felt betrayed. I mean who wouldn’t? My bestfriend is dating my ex? It hurts like hell.”

She looked down at her hands. kaya hinawakan ko ang kamay niya at patuloy na ngasalita.

“ Pero when you met an accident, i just realized that i can’t live without you. Even for a second. For every second na nakaratay ka diyan di ko mapigilang umiyak at sisihin ang sarili ko for what happened to you. Then i had this conversation with deejay just before you-you nearly die. Then he made me realized that everything happens for a reason.”

She looked up. She has tears streaming down her cheeks.  

So I decided to tell her what a best friend should tell.

I smiled at her while saying.

“ Tsaka kung masaya ka kay albie? Then i’ll be happy for you, I’ll be happy because I know that you deserve to be happy.”

She just smiled while crying. Then she hugged me

“Thank you best. Thank you”

I patted her back.

“no juls, Thank you.”

“Thank you for being my bestfriend.”
