The day after we placed a bid on the house the real estate agent got back to us. The offer was accepted and we were going to sign the papers. But first we had to go over to Cara's house to give her the good news.

We were driving over there. I was a little nervous to see her for the first time in a while and especially after the phone call.

We arrived at about 5 o'clock. I go up to the 5th floor of the building and knock on the door. The person who answers doesn't look anything like anyone from her family. At first I think I have the wrong number.

"Are you after the Hightons." She asks. She's a small stout elderly woman.

"Yeah." I answer, "Yeah I am."

She goes off and soon Cara's mum is standing at the door.

"Oh Alice." She says greeting me. "Its been a long time since I saw you last. I heard that a lot has happened."

"Yeah, a lot definitely has happened." I say.

"So what brings you here." She asks.

"Well I actually have a big surprise for you and I would love if you and your family could come and see it." I say.

"What's the surprise?" She asks.

"Well that's the point. It's a surprise." I say.

"I don't know if I can do it Alice. I can send Cara off with you but I have to stay home and look after Joey. He's very ill at the moment and I can't leave him alone for too long."

Steff steps in. "I'm sure we could figure out a way to bring him with us. He might love to come aswell."

"Well if your sure I will just go get Cara." She says, "Do you want to come in."

We walk into the small apartment. I am very happy they are going to be able to move out of here soon.

Cara sees me and walks over to me.

"What are you doing her?" She asks. I can't tell if her voice is angry of sad.

"I have a surprise for you and your family." I say.

"Yeah well maybe we don't want your surprise. Maybe you should just go off back to your perfect life and leave me here in my shit one."

"Cara please. I just want to help." I say.

"We don't want your charity. Just leave us alone."

Her mum walks in with Joey. He is in a wheelchair and he looks dangerously thin. His head is completely bald.

"Cara can you come please." Her mum asks.

She folds her arms. "No I can't."

"Cara please just come." She says fed up. You can here the tiredness in her voice.

"I'm not going." She says.

"Cara I'm sorry to do this to you but if you don't come then I'm going to have to tell Susan."

"Fine, I'll freaken go!" She shouts.

We pack everyone up in the car and drive them to the house.

"Alice do you want to tell them what the surprise is now." Steff says as we pull up to the house.

Everyone piles out onto the street.

"Guys, as soon as you sign a few papers this house will belong to you. We are also going to set aside an allowance to help pay for bills until you get back on your feet." I say.

I watch as Cara's mum starts crying and Cara lets out a smile. "Thank you." She says to me, "Thank you Alice."
