Asher was stupid. He couldn't fathom why he would want to torture himself by coming back, to this awful town filled with awful memories. He lugged his suitcase off the airport's conveyor belt and dragged it towards the entrance. His parents should be here soon. He checked his watch for the third time in the last ten minutes, counting down the seconds until he could leave this place. Never could he have ever imagined he would be back here, and especially not for her wedding.

He was a fool, he knew it. What person would come back for their ex girlfriend's wedding when they didn't talk anymore? What person would come back and watch the love of their life marry someone else?

His phone buzzed with a missed call message as he tucked it back into his jean pocket. He didn't want to talk to Zach. It'd been too long, so many things unsaid. He couldn't just pick up the phone and act like everything was normal when nothing was fine. He couldn't understand why he clung so tightly to his past, his memories, when his heart broke at the mere mention of it.

He stared out in the distance to see familiar faces in an unfamiliar car. Since when had his parents gotten a new car? He knew that the old one was past its prime but he couldn't imagine his family ever parting with it. Nevertheless, he latched onto his suitcase handle and strode towards the car. He hurled the suitcase into the trunk that meaningless paper littered around. Slamming the boot closed, he flopped into the car and let out a sigh of relief. He was glad to be with his family again.

"Baby, we've missed you," his mother said, turning around to face him in the back seat of the car, "How have you been?"

"I've missed you all too. It's been pretty hectic but I've been doing well," he told them, mustering a huge smile which he knew wasn't the real thing. There was turmoil inside his mind and he couldn't seem to quieten his raging thoughts. What had his life become? Staying at home all the time and never leaving? Check. Hopelessly in love with his ex who happens to be getting married? Check. Lost all sense of direction in his life? Check.

"How long are you staying for?" His sister asked with a hint of hope in her eyes. Asher hated to make her sad but he knew that he couldn't bear to stay for any longer than necessary. He was leaving the day after the wedding, no exceptions. He couldn't let her down, not again, so he shrugged and hoped she wouldn't question him further.

The sound of tires on the road filled his ears like music as he drifted off to sleep in the backseat of the car.
