Chapter 5 "Proposal"

Galatea

One year later

I had visited one of my customers to fix something wrong with her dress. That lady was very uncareful with her clothes, we had made that dress two days ago and today she phoned to me that she had ripped it by mistake. She could not bring it to my house and I went to hers in order to see what was wrong and take it to fix it again. I always worked at home. I neither had ever my own shop nor I went to my customer's houses. They were coming to mine, except from some occasions like this that I had to go to them.

I always believed that women had to stay at home, do the housework and take care of their husband and children. It was not good for them to work out of the house, it seemed like they ignored their houses. That's why I never allowed my daughters to work. I only let them finish school in order for them to be educated.

Firstly they had to learn how to be good housewives and then me and their father would find the appropriate groom for them. I could not complain, they were very good housewives and I was always careful with them not to destroy our family's reputation.

Sometimes they were complaining that they were not allowed to work or go to university, but I was working since I got married. That was wrong, I was working but I was working inside my house, I was not working out of it. I could take care of my children and my husband, my job never distract me from my other duties.

"What do you think Galatea??" Mrs Miranda, my customer asked

"About what Miranda??" I asked back while I was putting some brooches on her dress

"About the torpedoing of "Ellie" that happened a month ago, do you believe that it will be a war??" She answered

"I do not know.. that attack was not a good sign. It has scared a lot of people, even my husband was afraid. But I do not believe it at all, wouldn't they do something again?? It has been a month since the torpedoing." I said

"The Germans have already started the war in many places of the Earth." She said

"So what?? Many people say that "Ellie" was attacked by Italians. Germans were not involved." I said

"They are allies." She said

"Oh Miranda, who will want to start war with such a small country like Greece?? There is no reason..!!" I said

"I am so scared Galatea.. not only for us but especially for our children. If they start a war, our sons must go to fight." She said making me shiver only at the thought.

I could not imagine my life without Dimitri. I loved all my children and I could die for them if I had to, but my weakness was him. I did not want to even thing about the dangers he would go through, our agony.

"Stop it Miranda, stop telling those things!! I shivered!!" I said intense

"Sorry Galatea, I am just speaking the truth." She excused herself

"Okay. Remove the dress now, I will take it to my house to fix it. It will be ready tomorrow, one of my children will bring it to you." I said changing topic.

"Okay thank you." She said.

She went inside her bedroom. After a few minutes she returned dressed with different clothes. She gave me the dress and accompanied me to the door. While I was walking outside and I was talking to her, a girl walked quickly out of her garden. It seemed like Lydia.

"Wasn't that your daughter??" She asked me

"Yes it was Lydia.." I said confusingly

"She has grown up so much!! She is so beautiful!! Where is she going??" She asked
