"Well, hello, love," a voice said.
I whipped round, one hand casually resting on my pistol. "Do I know you?"
"I'm Captain Jack Sparrow, love," the man said, doing some strange gestures with his hands. I raised one eyebrow. I had seen a drawing of Sparrow, since I had to know what he looked like before I could catch him, but he was just so... I don't know.
I could say he was flamboyant, I could say he was strange, I could say he had long, dread locked hair, with weird bones and coins in it. He was all those things, and something more I couldn't quite put my finger on.
He smiled at me, and I saw his gold teeth flash in the light. "Can I buy you a drink?"
He thinks I'm just another Tortuga girl, I thought, contemptuously. Part of me resented being taken for a whore, but the bounty hunter in me knew it would be an excellent disguise.
"A drink," I said. "Would be great."
He bought me a rum. I drained the glass in one short swig. He looked at me, and I think I saw a flash of respect and hopefully awe in his eyes.
"So, love," he said. "What brings a pretty girl like you to Tortuga? Because it's quite obvious you ain't just another girl like Scarlett and Giselle over there." He gestured at some elaborately made-up girls.
"How can you tell?" I asked, taken by surprise.
"Love. I'm Captain Jack Sparrow! Savvy?"
"Are you now? And should I know that name?" I was playing it cool, trying to make him think I was just another dumb girl. Most men thought that. It made me sick, how chauvinistic they all were! But, I digress.
"Love. I'm the most fearsome pirate in the Spanish Main."
And I'm the most fearsome bounty hunter in the Spanish Main, I wanted to say. But didn't, for obvious reasons.
"So..." I said. "Do you have a ship?" All the time, my mind was working. How do I get Jack out of the crowded pub and into a secluded place where I could capture him?
"I do. Do you want to see her?"
"I'd love that!" I exclaimed.
"Right then." He got up, tossed a few coins to the man behind the bar, and put an arm around my waist. "Let's go."
