I felt my body tense. The last time someone called me by my real name had been in this very place. Port Royal.
I felt as if my heart was full of tears. I wanted to cry, but there was no way I was going to! Particularly not in front of that smirking pirate.
"You don't want to be doing this, love," he said to me, as I dragged him out of the brig and on deck.
"Oh, and why would that be, pirate?" I asked.
"Because if you do, you'll lose every chance of being captain of the Black Pearl."
I stared at him. How could he possibly know that was what I wanted?
He smirked again. "You want the Pearl. You can have her."
"How's that?"
"Don't hand me over to Beckett just yet. Wait for the Pearl to follow us hereinto Port Royal, where they will be a sitting duck for the likes of the Dauntless and the Interceptor. Kill all the crew and take over the ship. Simple, darlin'."
I considered. His plan sounded so simple, but I was sure there was a catch. I desperately wanted to give him to Beckett just get rid of him. Something about those eyes of his unsettled me. I always felt as if he could read my mind with those eyes...
But the Pearl. The last real pirate ship on the waters... Mine...
I closed my eyes and imagined myself at the helm, a soft sea breeze dancing in my hair, sunlight on my face.
"Tempting, isn't it? How can you possibly resist, love?"
"Alright. Supposing I do agree. What’s in it for you?"
"Because the crew of the Pearl aren't just going to hand her over to you, are they? You need me to convince them. You need me to be able to make a deal with them. And, once I've done that and you've go the Pearl, you'll keep me alive."
"So," I said, feeling confused. "You'll give me the Pearl in exchange for your life."
"Got it in one, love."
I was very tempted. All I had to do was say to Beckett I hadn't been successful in capturing Sparrow. He would never know the difference. My reputation would be slightly tarnished, but I could live it down. And now I would have a ship of my very own! And what a ship!
"We have an accord," I said, impulsively. Jack shook hands with me, grinning.
"You made a good choice, love."
"All hands on deck!" I called. "Hoist the sails! Take us out of Port Royal, then drop anchor! We're going to lie in wait!"
"What are we waiting for, Captain?" Johnson yelled.
I smiled. "The Black Pearl," I replied.
