"You know, I thought you were different," Jack sighed, as he stared at me through the bars. I shrugged and tried not to let his words hurt me. As if I cared what a pirate thought of me!
"I'm not so different, Sparrow. Just a girl doing a job."
"Some job!"
"Someone's got to do it," I said, stiffly.
"Not you, though. It must be a very lonely life, you lead. You're a traitor. Hated and despised by everyone, even the people you work for. Because nobody likes a traitor, love."
I swallowed. "I'm happy enough."
"Are you?"
"Yes. Stop it, Sparrow. Stop trying to get inside my head! You don't know anything about me, you don't know what I think or what I feel! That's the way I want it."
"I'm tryin' to get to know ya, love," he said, sounding... hurt? "Most girls would be highly flattered, by the way."
"I ain't most girls," I replied, sharply.
He rolled his eyes. "We've got a right one here," he muttered, as if to himself. I narrowed my eyes. "Love, tell me a little about yourself! What 'arm can it do?"
I thought. Maybe I could tell him something. Perhaps it would shut him up a bit...
"I was born in Port Royal," I said. It felt so strange, telling this story to a pirate. I had kept it secret for so long. The less people knew about me, the better. I still believed that. So why was I telling it to Sparrow? Maybe it was that interested look in his eye, that made me really believe he cared, he wanted to know. So, I went on: "I was born in Port Royal to rich parents. My father was Lord James and my mother was a lady. Well, my father died when I was six. When I was eighteen, my mother died too. It was a terrible thing to see. Every day, she would grow weaker and weaker. She had a kind of fever." I shuddered at the memory of my mother lying in bed dying, with her dark eyes too large in her sepulchral face. "Before she died, she..." I swallowed. "She..."
"She what, love?" prompted Jack.
"She told me she had been married before... To a pirate. And that I was really his child and not Lord James. And that I was a pirate's daughter. And then she died."
"But you turn pirates in to the authorities!" Jack exclaimed.
I drop my eyes. "I hate piracy, Sparrow! It's wicked and cruel! You kill innocent people!"
"And Cutler Beckett doesn't?" yelled Jack.
"He is trying to uphold order and... and..." I was so angry, words failed me. "Oh, how could I expect a pirate ever to understand?”
"Yeah, how could I? I'm just a pirate," growled Jack as I turned and marched away.
