I ran at Jack Turner, cannoning into him and knocking him over. We both fell to the floor, both fighting to get hold of the heart. Jack Sparrow seized the opportunity and leapt into the fray.
“Get the knife!” I yelled to him. “Before he stabs someone with it!”
I managed to get astride Jack, sitting on his stomach. He wriggled and twisted underneath me, and then finally dislodged me, throwing me to the ground and banging my head against the hard wooden floor. I saw stars fluttering around me, then the were gone, and I was back up, back fighting. I was hitting Jack Turner, struggling to get the heart.
I was worried to see Turner still had the knife, but then I remembered my pistol. Just as I got it out of my pocket and was pointing it at him, he lunged towards me, thrusting the knife deep in my stomach. I remember dodging to the side, but his aim was too good.
Pain. Sharper than I had ever felt before. And I was screaming.
I dropped the pistol and tried to wrench the knife out of me, warm blood gushing over my hands.
My eyes were closing, almost of their own accord, and I was falling, falling, falling.
Before I fell, my eyes met Jack Sparrow’s. His face was blurry, and I couldn’t see him properly. Before I fell, I whispered: “I love you.”
I wonder if he heard me,
was the last thing I thought before my vision grew dark and I fell unconscious.
