“I’m scared…” whispered Ragetti in my ear.
“It’s alright, Rags,” I said, soothingly. “We’ll be fine. Think of the treasure.”
Ragetti nodded. “Cathy… If we make it out of here alive, do you think you would marry me?”
I burst out laughing. I couldn’t stop myself, but I felt awful when I saw Rag’s face and realized he had actually been serious.
“Um… Well, thanks,” I said, struggling to keep my face serious. “But… I love somebody else.” I tried to keep my voice low, in case Jack heard.
“I hope he’s worth it,” Rag’s said.
“No,” I said, sadly. “He’s not.”
And that was the last thing I said before a rope tightened round my leg and I was yanked upwards.
After I got over the initial shock, my first thought was: I am so glad I am not wearing a dress.
Because I was hanging upside-down from a rope attached to a tree. I whipped out my sword and tried to slash at the rope, but it was thick and held fast. And that was when I realized the rest of the crew were all caught by the ropes as well!
“Why is nobody coming?” I yelled to Jack. “Surely if they trap us like this, they’ll be coming to kill us shortly?”
“What’s the point in killing us?” Jack yelled back. “We’ll die of the heat or of starvation or of the birds that come and tear out our eyes with their beaks.”
“You’re making that up!” I gasped, hoping and praying that he was making it up. Even though I knew he wasn’t. “Well, we can’t just hang about here and wait, can we?” I started slashing at the rope again.
“Cathy, don’t waste your energy,” Jack said. “It won’t do any good. The ancient tribes built these ropes to be unbreakable. Even if you can cut it, it will just knot itself back together.”
I hung there, feeling dizzy every time I looked at the ground. All the blood was rushing to my head and I was starting to feel sick.
“You mean…” I struggled to make sense of things. “There’s no escape?”
“That’s exactly what I mean, love.”
