Levi's POV
Cath's been acting really strange lately and I have no idea why. She's been avoiding me and making up a ton of reasons why she can't do things with me. My parents just invited us over for dinner tomorrow night, and I'm hoping she'll be in the mood to go.
"Hey Levi?" Cath asks, interrupting my thoughts.
"Yeah?" I reply.
"Um, I was wondering if you wanted to do something tonight. Maybe rent a movie or something?" I'm so surprised that she finally wants to do something, that it takes me a few seconds to respond.
"Uh yeah, sure. That'd be great," I tell her, trying desperately to hide the surprise in my voice.
"Great! I'm thinking a horror movie," she says, grinning.
"Come on Cather. You know I don't like horror movies," I complain. "Please not a horror movie."
"Let's get the conjuring!"she cuts in, ignoring my previous plea.
"No!" I say, almost shouting.
"Oh come on Levi. You always plan things. Now it's my turn," she says. "I'll be right next to you the whole time. You can even close your eyes when you get scared. I'll hold your hand."
"I'm not that much of a wimp Cather," I shoot back, smiling. "However, I wouldn't mind that cuddling offer." It actually doesn't sound like such a bad idea. At least I'll finally be spending some time with her.
"So it's settled," she says. "We'll rent the conjuring."
***
Throughout the entire movie, I cuddle with Cath, constantly burying my face in her neck. I'm trying to keep my mind off of all the demons and ghosts. I keep sneaking glances at her, trying to see if she has realized just how scared I am. I have no idea what it is, but I get terrified when it comes to horror movies. I can watch any type of movie, except horror. That's just how I am. And Cath likes to tease me for it ALL THE TIME.
***
After the movie, we head upstairs to get ready for bed. Cath doesn't really say much. I feel so bad, because I don't know what I did. It's like one minute, she's fine, but then the next, she remembers whatever it is I've done, and goes back to avoiding me. I wish she would talk to me so that I can apologize for my mistake that I don't even know I made.
"Can I get you a glass of water, sweetheart?" She shakes her head no. "Is there anything I can do for you?" She replies no, again.
"Cather, can you please tell me what's upsetting you?" I ask.
"Nothing's upsetting me,"" she replies.
"Well you've been ignoring me for the past few days and I want to know if I did something that bothered you," I tell her.
"Please Levi. Just leave me alone for awhile" she says, and I can tell that something's clearly bothering her.
"What's going on Cath?" I ask, trying to sound more gentle.
"It's honestly nothing," she says.
"I want to help. I'm really worried about you," I tell her. Then, when it looks like she's about to tell me, she bursts into tears. I don't say anything. I just hold her. I look up at her when her tears begin to slow down a little. "Cather, I love you. But you're killing me. I don't know what to do. What can I do to help you?"she doesn't say anything, so I start throwing out guesses.
"So it isn't something I did? Did you do something? Sweetheart, if you did something wrong I will still love you. I'll always love you no matter what. Just please tell me"
"You didn't do anything. And neither did I," she sobs.
"Is it just that time of month? You know, I don't really do well talking about anything relating to or involving that kind of stuff, but you can tell me if that's all it is," I say, starting to get really concerned.
"It's not that simple," she chokes out. I wipe the fresh tears off of her cheeks.
"We've always told each other everything. So why is this time any different?" I say. She takes a deep breath in.
"I'm pregnant Levi."
***
It takes me a good two minutes to process this insane news. Cath is pregnant?
"Wait. Are you sure?"I ask. I realized afterwards that it was probably a dumb question.
"Yes, Levi. I took three tests and they all came back positive," she answers, still with tears in her eyes. "And I've already started gaining some weight."
"Cather, that's wonderful!" I say, suddenly overjoyed. "Why were you so afraid to tell me?"
"Because we can't have a baby Levi!" she sobs.
"Well, you are pregnant, so we obviously did something right. We can technically have a baby," I say. Probably another stupid comment.
"You don't understand Levi. We aren't ready for this. I work at Barnes and Noble for God's sake! How are we supposed to raise a baby?!" She shouts.
"Okay so we can't raise this baby. Then what are we supposed to do?" I shout back. The look on her face then goes from angry to closed off and sad.
"Adoption," she says, quietly.
"No. No no no. I won't let that happen. I will do whatever I have to. I'll get other jobs and start making more money. I promise you Cather," I say, really meaning it. She's quiet for a moment, so I think she did actually contemplate it.
"I can't do this," she says after a minute. She starts crying again.
"Hey hey hey. Don't say that," I tell her, holding her tight.
"We will get through this together," I kiss her forehead gently. She may have her doubts, but I know that we are ready for this. I'm going to be a dad. This is so incredible, I can't help but feel a few tears forming in my eyes.
"You really think so?" She asks looking in to my eyes.
"I know so," I reply.
"We're going to have a family. We're going to be a family" she says, a small smile spreading over her face. I lean in and kiss her. She is so beautiful.
"Yeah," I tell her. "We are."
