A Voice

I floundered in the darkness
Voices whispered around on all sides
I wandered deeper into the blackness
Following vainly the phantom lights

All around in the fog they crept
Saying "fall into the deepest night"
In all their ways they snarled and wept
Saying I'd never make it into the light

Blind, I followed each and every voice
I walked towards where they said I should go
But every voice I trusted was indeed the wrong choice
And every friend I made turned into foe

They laughed and jeered, cried and cajoled
Poking me in every direction
To them I was a joke that never grew old
I was lost, and they had fun instead

I've now grown used to constantly falling
I've lost count of how many miles, or ways I've roamed
Though now there is a voice I hear, it's calling
Saying trust me, follow me, I'll bring you home.
