It only got colder as I lie on the concrete. I felt like I was connected with the ground. Like I always had whenever I visited Liam. He won't talk to me now, but I know what he'd say if he could.
A loud squeaking sounded from the other side of the room, opposite of the window which I was staring out. I turned to the opening where a young man came in, wearing a suit.
He turned on an eerie light that glowed so unnaturally and cold. I covered my eyes with my right hand, which was bruised and bloody.
"Miss Hester?" the man called.
I forced myself to sit up and he helped me into a chair that was rather uncomfortable.
"I brought you your medication," he started, handing me three pills and a glass of water.
I took it reluctantly because I had no other choice. It's not like they made a difference anyway. I still felt pain. I still felt guilt.
"Also, I wanted to ask you a few more questions," he continued.
I didn't respond, so he kept going.
"Why did you do it?"
I smiled, still refusing to reply.
He searched my expression, obviously thinking I'm crazy.
"It's not like I murdered anybody," I retorted.
He looked down at some paperwork. I so badly wanted to know what he was thinking but he wouldn't give anything away. None of them did. It was like reading a book without sight- close to impossible.
"On the night that your parents told you whose child you really were, where were you before then?" he asked.
I snorted. "I told you. I was with Liam."
"And your parents never asked you where you were off to? What you were doing?"
"I wasn't doing anything wrong! And no, they didn't. They probably thought I was with Felisha or something."
He didn't look convinced at all. "Mm-hmm. There's just one problem with your story, Miss Hester."
"And what would that be?" I challenged.
"You said Liam was in most of your classes that year, right?"
"Yes," I answered suspiciously, wondering where this was going.
"That means you and Liam were the same age. How could that be if you are from different fathers?"
