It was nighttime before Elias reached the edge of the cliff. He hadn't bothered looking anywhere else because of what Lily had told him, but he still kept his eye open. The moon was just over the horizon, shedding a bright, white stream of light across the cliffside. Underneath the cliffs, the water gurgled, smashing against the rocks and drawing back out to sea. The hooting of an owl sounded above in the trees that loomed overhead, sending chills down his spine, but nothing would stop him from seeking out the missing girl.
"Jasmine?" Elias called, spotting her as she climbed out of a hollow, exactly where Lily said she'd be. If Jasmine had heard him, she was doing a great job ignoring him, until she turned around and he saw her face. Tears streamed out of her sparkling blue eyes and down across her cheekbones, catching the moonlight as the trickled onto the rock beneath her. They shimmered as they coated her cheeks, spreading over her lips and turning them glossy. Her beautiful brown-streaked blonde hair glittered in the moonlight, casting rays of light as it swayed in the breeze.
How had I not realized how beautiful she was, Elias thought to himself. He regretted everything he had done to her that day, and slowly approached her.
"Jasmine?" He repeated.
Jasmine looked up at him with eyes full of grief. Her hair had been dropped down, and it blew across her face, hiding it from him. The jeans and t-shirt had been replaced by a white dress, glowing in the silvery light. Her shoes had been taken off, and she was standing barefoot on the edge of the cliff.
"Why did you come here?" she screamed, startling Elias so much, he stumbled backward. This was not what he had expected from the girl that was once calm, able to contain herself. "Why can't you just leave me alone?"
Her voice was torn. Every bit of grief and sorrow was expressed in her bedraggled voice. Every heartbroken emotion was expressed in that one word she said: why? Elias didn't know why. He didn't know why he was there in that moment. All he could do was carry on walking toward her and pull her into a hug. Eyes widening, Jasmine hung limply there, until all the emotions came back to her and she pushed him away.
"What reason is there for me to be here?" She shouted. "What is the purpose of my life?"
