I opened my eyes slowly, bracing for the shock of sunlight. I looked around the room, thrown at the crazy mess covering the floors and bed. Clothes were strewn in odd places, the sheets were crumpled and on the floor. Steve's gun and badge lay on the floor next to his belt at the foot of the bed. I lay my head back on my pillow, looking up at the ceiling. So many thoughts were running through my head at the speed of light, giving me a throbbing headache.
I reached across the bed to the bed side table, in search for a glass of water. The sound of glass doors sliding caught my attention. I peered through the window into the backyard. Steve stood at the railing separating the beach from the garden, his back facing me. I lifted myself up and out of my bed. I walked through the sliding glass doors, trying to decipher what I would say. He was fully dressed, phone pressed to his ear. He was whispering, French maybe. He was done a few minutes later. He abruptly tuned around, surprised to see me. "I didn't wanna wake you." He said quietly. I nodded and walked over to stand next to him.
He sighed, "You know, this thing we got going, it's not anybody's business but ours." I nodded again, not able to speak. "I'm not sure what this is, or how to deal with it. I know that no one can find out about it. Not Kono, or Chin or Lou or Catherine or anyone else, okay?" He paused, "Not till I'm ready." That's when I finally found my voice. "Until your ready? And exactly how long will that be?" I glared at him. "You're forgetting that I have been your partner for the last 7 years, I know what a stubborn son of a bitch you can be!" My voice was beginning to rise. He did't respond, didn't even flinch, so I continued. "How do you know it's such a bad thing? What about how I feel? How do you know I don't want people finding out?" He turned to me, "Because I know that your just as scared as I am." He walked past me, through the sliding doors and out to his car.
After a few minutes of just standing there in shock, letting the truth sink in, I turned back to the house. I cleaned up the room, blinking back the thoughts of him in his distraught state, suddenly worried about his safety. I picked up the sheet from the ground and revealed his badge to be be gone, but his gun still sat at the foot of my bed.
I felt slightly relieved at the sight of his gun in my possession and no chance of him getting hurt. I walked into the kitchen, running my hand through my messed up hair, only now noticing that I was still wearing last-night's shirt. my thoughts were abruptly interrupted by the sight of a full coffee pot and 2 glass mugs, one half full sitting on the table. I smiled slightly, suddenly upset I got mad at him.
I walked over to the table and picked up the mug. I downed it in one gulp, letting the mug heat up my hands. I walked back to my room and changed my shirt, looking at the framed picture of Steve and I on my dresser. I strapped my holster on, clipping my badge on. Looking at the polished gold made me think back to the first time I met Steve. Catching him by surprise, we almost ended up killing each other. Even though it was an unfortunate way to meet, I wouldn't regret any minute of it.
I picked up Steve's gun from the floor and pocketed it. I found my phone underneath the gun, blowing up with messages from Lou. I dialled his number. He picked up after 2 rings. "You are one ballsy guy, Danny. Where are you? We've all been waiting for you for half an hour." He yelled. "Don't worry, I'm on my way." I reassured him. I hung up the phone and grabbed my keys. I headed out to my car, suddenly noticing the dark clouds that hung above.
As I started up the car, I looked out the window, feeling unprepared for the day ahead. Through the drive to the palace, I kept noticing how the sky expressed exactly how I was feeling. Unsure and distressed. What a great day this was going to be.
