"Are you sure?" he chuckled against my lips, pulling back a little. My lips automatically slipped into a pout, as I crossed my arms across my chest.
"You're an ass," I snapped.
"Hey, I'm not the one who-"
"You started it!"
"I did not!"
"Will you two stop bickering like fucking children and get back over here?" I heard Kate yell out, causing my face to flush into a deep red. Huffing once more, I stepped away from Asher, and headed towards the lobby of the library. Asher had chased me into the depths of the nonfiction section, and without the signs, I wouldn't have been able to make it back.
Of course, as soon as I thought that, the lights turned off.
Darkness swept through the room, rendering my sense of direction completely useless. I could feel Asher's breath on the back of my neck, comforting me.
"Do you know the way back?" he asked me hopefully.
"Not without the signs," I told him, reaching for my phone. As I took it out, I realized that I had completely drained its battery, and I had nothing to help me see. "Do you have your phone?"
"No, I left it with my other stuff," he informed me. I heard his weight shift, and turned around to see him sitting down.
"Really?" I raised my eyebrows.
"They'll find us," he shrugged. I rolled my eyes, and sat down on the ground next to him.
"You know," he whispered softly into my ear, "you can sit on my lap."
"I'd much sooner die," I retorted, staring into the blackness ahead of me.
"Are you sure?"
"Completely."
As if in response, with one swift movement, he picked me up and placed me between his legs. I rolled my eyes at him again, pushing off the ground the move back to my spot.
"Oh come on, I'm not that bad," he groaned, circling his hands around the sides of my waist.
"I beg to differ," I snapped, whacking his hands off of my waist so I could move. However, even with my female bravado, I couldn't manage to shove him away from me, and just ended up hitting skin angrily.
"Ow, fuck," Asher cursed, still not loosening his grasp on me. He had turned me around, and I could see his eyes now, his chocolate brown gaze locked with my own blue one.
My breath hitched as he leaned closer towards me, bringing his mouth to my ear.
"Calm down," he ordered me, his voice soft and soothing.
"Why should I listen to you?" I quipped back, raising an unseen eyebrow.
"Because if you don't stop hitting me, I won't be able to control myself," he answered, sending a deep shudder through my body. My heart thundered dangerously loud at his words. Almost as if he could sense my indecision tainted with lust, his eyes came closer and closer until his lips finally touched my own.
"Kara!" I heard Jace's voice call out a few bookshelves away, snapping me out of the state of intoxication Asher had plunged me into. Sighing in relief or despair, I slipped from Asher's arms, standing up shakily.
"Jace," I called out in reply, despite the obvious protest in Asher's sagging shoulders, "we're here!"
