Hadley and Kate had both ditched me today.
Kate had some "math project," and Hadley had a prior commitment. They were probably just trying to torture me.
I peered down at my book, glaring at it as if it had wronged me. It hadn't. Yet.
"Hey," I heard a voice mutter, and I felt a shifting of weight as someone sat down next to me.
"Jace," I stated, looking away from my book slowly, my eyes finding his.
"Kara," he nodded. "Do you ever eat your lunch?"
"Nah," I admitted casually, pretending to turn my attention back to my book.
"You should," he informed me, taking out his own lunch, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich paired with water.
"Thank you for the wise words of wisdom," I muttered sarcastically, as Jace rolled his eyes.
"You're so very welcome," Jace replied, in the same tone as mine. Jace turned to his lunch, and I turned to my book, and both of us sat there silently, our shoulders slightly brushing.
I kept glancing up while trying to read my book, anxious, as I felt someone's gaze on me, but each look was fruitless. Nobody was staring at me.
Or so it seemed.
"Xander, I love you," Gina exclaimed, as Xander nibbled her earlobe delicately. Moans escaped her mouth, echoing through the silent cavern housing their secret rendezvous, I read. I looked up again, stupidly. Just once more, I promised myself.
And I was met by an intense glare. Asher.
He looked at me, unwaveringly, his fists clenched tightly. I felt a strong smirk creeping onto my face.
Wait, I thought urgently.
I could make this worse. For him.
I slowly rested my hand on Jace's, which sent a shiver down my spine that I chose to suppress, and he shifted his eyes, so they were looking at me in confused boredom. I bit my lip slowly, for show, and quickly explained, making it look as if I were asking him something frivolous.
"Asher. Revenge," I informed him, and Jace raised his eyebrows.
"You want to kiss me?" Jace asked me, confusion seeping into his countenance.
"No," I stammered quickly, "I mean not if you don't- and like-"
He rolled his eyes again, and slowly closed the distance between us. I felt his hands slide to my waist, respectably, not toying with the hem of my shirt as I had expected him to. I hesitated, but brought my arms up so that they were wrapped around his neck. His lips were warm and soft against mine, smelling of an intoxicatingly manly scent, and just subtly of cologne. I could feel his lips teasing mine, bringing me to the brink of want and desperation.
God, Jace was a good kisser.
I pulled him closer to me, his warmth surrounding me, filling me up with something I hadn't felt in a long time.
And then we broke away, me panting for breaths, and Jace acting completely normal, a slight smirk playing on his lips.
"Incoming," he told me, turning back to his lunch. I whipped my head around and saw an angry Asher headed in my direction.
"Kara, come with me," he ordered, slow and calm.
"What if I don't want to?" I asked him innocently.
"Come with me or I'll-" Asher started to threaten. I pictured what would happen if I refused again. No, it was better to play along.
"Fine," I cut him off, grabbing my things swiftly, and following him out of the cafeteria.
"What the hell was that?" Asher rounded on me as soon as we found a somewhat private corner.
"I was kissing Jace," I shrugged.
"Why were you kissing Jace?" he asked me angrily, his calm façade completely shredded now.
"I like Jace. Therefore, I kissed Jace," I enunciated, talking to him as if he were a child.
"Why the fuck-" Asher began.
"Why the fuck not?" I countered, stepping closer to him, "Does it make you jealous?"
I smirked, laying a stray hand rest on his chest. My other hand hung limply by my side, and Asher grabbed both of them roughly as I neared him.
"Me? Jealous of you? You're an ugly dumbass. Why would I ever be jealous of a girl like you?" he questioned me defensively. I tried to pretend that the words didn't sting me, and used all of my willpower to maintain the smirk on my face.
"Okay," I said nonchalantly. I shrugged and walked away from him, back towards the cafeteria.
Okay.
