Six Years Ago

Laying in bed Sofia couldn't contain her excitement about getting into her dream college. NYU was calling her name and in just a few months she would be off living in her favorite city and studying to become a speech therapist. A small smile appeared on her face as she was reading over her acceptance letter once again. She had received the letter two days ago and after she had informed her parents they hugged her lovingly as their eyes gleamed with pride. Her parents were truly happy for her.

Now as she sat back up on her bed she frowned as she looked at the clock. It was 10:00 at night and her parents as well as her little sister, Sara, still weren't home from Sara's school play. Her little six year old sister was playing the little bear from Goldie Lock's and the Three Bears. Sara has been talking nonstop about this for the last couple of months. Sofia regretted not being able to go to her baby sister's play, but her work has kept her longer then she expected.

As worry filled Sofia's veins she tried to calm herself and dialed her mom's number, but after a few rings she didn't pick up. So Sofia tried calling both of her parents for the past half an hour, but each time the phone rang and nobody would answer. As Sofia put the phone down a horrible feeling came over her body making her shiver. She sat down on the sofa clutching the phone in her hands again. As the clock continued to tick the minutes soon became hours because the next thing Sofia remembers is waking up to the sound of the doorbell.

She glanced up at the clock it was nearly two- o'clock in the morning. Who could it be at this time of night? she thought as the doorbell continued to ring. But then she remembered her parents hadn't come home so it must be them. With shaky hands Sofia went to go open the door however, she still couldn't remove the bad feeling from her body. Sofia slowly opened the door and there stood two police officers soaking wet in the rain. It must have started raining when she fell asleep, Sofia thought.

"Are you Sofia Martin?" asked one of the officers.

Nervously Sofia nodded her head. The two officers looked at one another and took of their hats.

The officers next few words pierced a hole in Sofia's heart.

"I'm sorry to inform you, but your parents had a car accident. They were hit by a drunk driver and their car crashed into a tree."

The officer looked at Sofia as the tears flowed down her face. "Yo-your parents died on impact and your little sister we were able to bring her out of the car, but she died on her way to the hospital. I am so sorry."

But at that point Sofia sat on the staircase and cried her heart out. A thousand thoughts flowed through her mind, but she wasn't able to ask anything. She felt someone sit besides her and rubbed her back in a reassuring manner. She looked up and it was the officer who's words crashed her world forever. Without thinking Sofia hugged the officer and cried onto his shoulders. Her sobs getting louder and louder by each passing minute.

After that day her life was never the same again. Everything she once held so dear was taken away from her.

Three Months after the funeral

"I have decided you will no longer be part of the family from this day forward. By the laws of America when you're 18 you are a legal adult which his why you can no longer live with us." Sofia's grandpa said.

Sofia was puzzled about her grandpa's outburst and the tears she tried to stop after her family's funeral began to come down her face again. She knew her grandpa was mean and hotheaded, but she had never expected him to kick her out, after all she was family.

"Your father killed my daughter and every time I look at you all you remind me of him. You're nothing to me take your things and get out. We have provided you with your necessities the last three months and now you're no longer welcome here" her grandpa shouted.

Sofia was too hurt to speak so she slowly got up to get her things, but her grandma who was holding her hands wouldn't let her go. She looked at her grandmother who was crying and was looking at Sofia with love. She always loved her grandma. Her grandma never failed to shower Sofia with love and always cared for her.

For the sake of her grandmother Sofia wiped her tears and gently let go of her grandmother's hands. She ran upstairs grabbed her things and packed everything inside her car. One last time she stepped foot into her grandparent's house.

Sofia wiped the tears of off her grandma's face and kissed her forehead and then gave her a long hug. Tears started pouring out her eyes again and her grandmother began wailing. As she said goodbye to her aunts, cousins and uncles everyone was crying and at that point Sofia felt suffocated.

Before she walked out of the house her grandfather's voice stopped her once again.

"Here are all the bank account information of you parents. I don't want you to ever coming back here again and I don't want you contacting anyone either" he said sternly looking at everyone.

Sofia grabbed the folder from his hands and nodded her head. She couldn't stay here another second or else she would never stop crying. As she was walking out the door her grandmother grabbed her hand again, pulling her in and shaking her head, but Sofia smiled and hugged her grandma one last time and quickly let her go as she ran out the door.

She started her car as the tears blurred her vision. As Sofia drove off she glanced back in he rearview mirror and saw her grandmother standing there holding her hand to her heart while crying in pain.

At that point Sofia couldn't control her emotions any longer and stopped her car near the lake by her grandparent's house. She cried and cried until her eyes became puffy and no more tears would fall out of her eyes.

Sofia wiped the tears that still lingered on her cheek and drove off having no idea where to go.

The people she once called family had deserted her forever.

Sofia became alone in this world, but she made herself a promise, no more tears she said no more tears.
