"I don't think I will be able to walk ever again! My feet are killing me" Bea groaned. Sofia chuckled as her best friend jumped onto the bed. Once again Bea's complaining after work has started.
"Oh Bea, do you ever not complain?" asked Faith throwing her pillow directly at Bea's face. All the girls in the room started laughing as Bea huffed out of bed and chucked her shoe at Faith's face, but before the shoe could hit Faith she quickly locked herself in the bathroom making the shoe hit the door instead.
Sofia sat down on her bed and began rubbing her temples it has been a stressful day at work. She was currently in Afghanistan working as a nurse. In fact all the girls here in the dorms were either nurses or doctors. The girls were working with soldiers everyday in the military base.
Sofia and Bea have been friends since high school and after her grandpa kicked her out she had been living in Bea's basement, paying rent to her parents. As soon as she was done with high school Sofia had saved enough money to move out so rented her own apartment with Bea who no longer wished to be living with her parents after she got pregnant with her daughter. After the death of her parents Sofia wasn't able to afford NYU on her own and gave up her dream of becoming a speech therapist for kids. She ended up going to a community college and then transferring to a public college which she worked her butt off to pay for. After she graduated from college this was the offer she got and took it immediately. Since the girls applied to the same program Bea also got accepted to it.
At first when the girls got to Afghanistan life was hard. The weather was hot and everything was just different, but as the days went by the girls got used to their lives in this foreign country. Here Bea and Sofia met Faith and all the other girls. They all became very good friends. Everyday at work Bea and the rest of the girls would flirt with the guys and some of them even went on dates. But not Sofia and even though a few guys have asked her out she politely declined.
Sofia sighed heavily and laid back down on her bed. She was exhausted and just wanted to sleep, but she was on call along with Bea and Faith.
"Here have some coffee" Bea sat down beside her friend giving her the coffee cup.
"How's Laila doing?" asked Sofia as she sipped her coffee. Bea smiled as she started telling her friend about her daughter. Laila had become the joy in Bea's life. She couldn't imagine her life without her. Bea was so upset when she had to leave Laila with her parents so she can come here for her job, but the hardest part of this job is not being able to see her daughter all the time. She misses her terribly.
"She misses her aunt Sofia very much" Bea said smiling. Sofia smiled at her she loved Laila dearly. Laila reminded Sofia of Sara and she promised herself she would be there for Laila no matter what.
As the two girls were quietly sipping their coffee, Sofia was lost in thought. Bea looked up at her friend throughout the years Sofia had changed. She lost weight, her eyes always looked sad and bottled up her emotions. Bea always worried about her friend she knows the pain Sofia went through and sometimes everything that she went through still haunts her.
"Hey Sofia I've been meaning to tell you something for awhile now" Bea said nervously biting her lip.
Sofia looked at her friend curiously, "about what?"
Bea looked down at her hands and began fidgeting with her shirt. "It-its about Laila's dad."
"B I told you, you don't have to tell me about him if you don't want to. I hope I never made you feel like you had to tell me" Sofia told her friend. She knew the topic about Laila's father was sensitive and Sofia didn't want to raise any emotion. She has been there with Bea through her pregnancy and had seen the hardship her friend faced.
"I know, but its just that-" Bea couldn't explain it to, but for a couple of months now Bea has been getting this bad feeling like something was going to happen to her. Maybe she was just being paranoid who knows, but she couldn't shake the feeling away.
"I want to tell you who her father is. I have kept it a secret for so long, but now I'm ready to talk about it and I want to tell you wh-" before Bea should finish her sentence their pagers went off. It was time to get back to work.
"B you can tell me later. It looks like something serious has happened we have to go now" Sofia grabbed her friend's arm and they ran out the door along with everyone else.
As the girls rushed to the hospital the scene before them shook everyone to their core.
Quickly all the girls were rushing around the hospital doing whatever they could to ease all the wounded soldiers pain. The soldiers were ambushed by the Taliban and there were many casualties. Even though Sofia has been working this job for a year and half this job never becomes easier.
As she finished helping this soldier get ready to go into surgery, Sofia stopped trying to catch her breathe. She never will get used to the smell of blood or in days like this the smell of death.
Suddenly, the doors busted open and a group of soldiers came in carrying another soldier on the stretcher. Doctor James rushed to the soldier and saw that he was bleeding severely from his abdomen. The bullet must have penetrated his artery and if they don't get the bullet out fast he will bleed out.
"Sofia I need you here" Doctor James yelled.
Sofia hurriedly ran over. "What do you need me to do?"
"We need to get the bullet out now before he bleeds out. On the count of three I'm going to remove my hands from the bleeding and you need to put your hands on it" Doctor James said.
Sofia gulped and nodded her head. "One, two and three" Doctor James quickly removed his hands to get a new pair of gloves and Sofia put her hands on the wound. But she couldn't manage to stop the bleeding because the soldier was to high up on the stretcher. As doctor James saw her struggling he looked at her and they both nodded knowing what Sofia had to do.
With the help of Doctor James she got up on top of the soldier and easily pressed her hands on his wound.
She looked at the soldier's face, his eyes were closed and he looked pale. So she closed her eyes and said a small prayer for him.
God please let him live.
